No this a gear reduction starter that spins clockwise and is used on the right side of the kart.

Mark,
From what I hear NCMP is the place to go if you want to run in a full field of Yamaha’s. How many Yamaha karts do you have running in a typical regional race? How do you seem to pull a crowd and no one else can?

Defiantly not a HDC5 because as everyone said a 5 doesn’t use the big nut. I say HDC 3 OR 4 but according to the picture it is junk so I would through it away and get a newer Horstman HDC5 2 or 3 disk depending on your weight. The reason I say it is junk is the front plate appears to be broken right at a weight attachment point and it would be hard to find parts as they haven’t made that style clutch in some time.
Good luck!

IMHO, If it was really about the kart count and making the sport bigger and better you would let them run the can or the pipe and adjust the weight accordingly then everyone could play. Just like they do in TaG X30 weighs something, Leopard Weighs something else and Rotax weighs somethings else they all play happily together!

David Cole,
Aren’t you now on the WKA board? Do you have any insight to why they went back to the can? I find it hard to believe it was kart count. The kart was down before the switch over to the pipe. I’m more incline to agree with Walt and Gary and say it was about money IMHO which would be a shame! Do you know if they poled the racers or just made a switch on there own?
We also enjoyed using the Sr.Y pipe last year and that seems to be a general consensus with everybody that switched from the can to the pipe.

Thanks everybody for the information. Tim when you rebuilt your CR500 did you take most of the gears out of the transmission? I see a lot of people do that. Does anybody know why? Is it weight or rotating mass?

There’s no question that the engine with a pipe is faster and has more power when tuned correctly . I agree that if they both weighed 320lbs there would be no catching the kart set up for the pipe however my dyno sheets read that there is a 3.5hp difference between the 4 hole can and the Sr.Y pipe and that’s not much more power to make up for the 40 pounds of weight that you have to add to run the WKA pipe. How many of these forums complain about weight and how they cant catch the little guy because there heavy. It would be interesting to know how much horse power it takes to push every additional 10 pounds.

Mike said ” what difference do you see between the best pipe and the 3 hole can or the 4 hole can ?”
When Daniel Woltjer sent back my engine it came with a Dyno sheet that read just about 19hp when it was built for a 4hole can(Yamaha Jr.) When he sent the Dyno sheet for a engine he rebuilt for me with a WKA Sr.Y pipe(Yamaha Sr.) it came back with a Dyno Sheet reading just over 22hp. So what I found was roughly 3.5hp advantage but I had to add 40lbs (Jr=320 Sr=360) of weight so although my daughter liked driving it better then the 4 hole can it was a wash time wise on a 7/10 mile 11 turn track. There are however pipes/Headers that make a lot more power then the Sr. Y pipe. A friend of mine put on a illegal pipe that picked up almost 2 seconds over the Sr. Y pipe.
I have no experience with a 3hole can

Buy 4 cheap scales at Target or Walmart and put them under each wheel not only will you know the total weight but you will know the weight balance of the four corners of your kart with or without you on it. Makes it nice it add weight to the right area of the kart.

David,
Are you guys getting together with CBS Sports again? Do you know when they plan to run there coverage of the races?
On another note the last race was replayed several times over a period of a couple of months any thoughts of having several different classes aired instead of the same class over and over?
Keep up the good work!

I knew I remembered reading something on karts with hand controls put hand controls in the search bar and it comes up with a T4 paraplegic that built a kart like you might need. Its A great article with videos.

I totally agree. Emory is awesome! The only Yamaha in the karting challenge to finish the race in the rain last weekend on slicks, everybody else either came in because they couldn’t run on slicks or crashed he just kept going like he was on rain tires. He is a awesome kid on and off the track.

The book by Gene Genibrel The complete Yamaha KT100 was a very good book you can also get all the specs. online by going to Yamaha and downloading the owner manuals. You can do a lot yourself but you will need someone to spilt the crank so that the rod can be installed Splitting and pressing the crank is probably to much for a 13 year old not to mention having the right tools to do the job correctly. The rest of it is straight forward however just a word to the wise you probably want to by your wife a new toaster oven after heating the cases to get the bearings to drop out or your food will taste funny for a while.
Good Luck!

Tony,
It sounds to me that you have a sensor going bad they usally start getting lazy and are slow to respond. As I said earlier our sensor will climb to about 1100 degrees as mark said. They do however look lazy on a graph compared to your RPM. Typically on the track I will see a range of mid 800’s to mid 1100’s. I look at the longest straight in the track and by seeing that the temperature climbing the whole time I know the engine is burning fuel and is not lean, if the temp. starts to cool before the end of the longest straight (before lifting out of the throttle) I know it stopped burning fuel and went lean. The secret to max power and engine longevity is to be on that edge of lean and still burning fuel (climbing temp) without running out of fuel (cooling temp) running lean.
Another possibility is that your so rich that the engine is staying cool due to not burning all the fuel cooling the combustion chamber and that will keep the cylinder cooler because the unburned fuel absorbs the heat from the cylinder/piston and exits through the exhaust.
Rich=Cold, Lean =Hot, Lean is also faster up to a point, Lean is also dangerous to the engine causing seizures.
Most 2 stroke guys will tell you the engine never ran faster then what it did right before it seized.
Good Luck!

In our case there is not much we can change, we basically use WKA rules and have to use the RLV9110 header with an Sr-Y pipe with at least 9.5″ of flex/connecter tube from the piston. We can go longer but I have not played with the lengths yet. Everybody locally seems to want to stay as close as possible to that minimum length.

Marks comment is correct. The EGT is located, diagnosed and works exactly as he says. Its not that uncommon to have a EGT sensor go bad. I have gone through several.

The guys at AIM (makers of the Mychron and the Race Studio software) are great! As John said they’re at all major races making sure everything is working correctly. I personally have asked them about several issues I didn’t understand and they were very helpful. There customer service is outstanding! I have had pieces break so I emailed them and they got right back to me, I shipped it to them in VA and they had it fixed No Charge by the end of the same week! They seem to be at GoPro Motorplex like once a year for a couple hour course on how to you use there Mychron 4 with their Race Studio 2 software and its well worth the time and money! If they come to a local track near you I would highly suggest the class.

David, what you said is exactly right so it doesn’t make sense that WKA went back to the can after being on the pipe. Hopefully now that you’re on the board and once you get settled in you can try to find answers to some of the things the racers find so odd.
