Hey, I’m wanting to get into kart racing… I’m 45 y/o and thinking I finally have time to do something that I really want to try.  I’m near Winston-Salem, NC.  I agree with many newbies on here that its quite overwhelming.  What I do know… I’m looking at primarily Woodleaf and Riverside tracks (both dirt ovals), by no means running all the time… Haven’t decided between flat or champ kart… I don’t really know where to turn next.  Ideas??? Pointers??? Anyone in this area???

      Hi Daren,

Welcome. The first thing you need to decide is what class you want to race. Check out the tracks you want to race at, confirm what classes they offer for your age, budget, and experience. From there, you go on to buy a kart/engine, and then hit the track.

For more specific questions, check out our 4-Cycle section of the forums.

You can check out ckikarts.com for more information on what is available to get you started with a kart, as I believe that is close to where you are. Good people.

David – Thanks, I”ve been to both Woodleaf and Riverside, I’m looking at Senior Heavy… I’d love to find someone in my area that wants or need some pit help, I’m willing to work just for the experience and knowledge.  I know I’ll buy used equipment but dont want to go into it blind.

Jay – I got the opportunity to go to VIR and run their 5/8 mile road track with over an hour of seat time over the day… it flat kicked my butt.  I’ve come to the conclusion in the near future I need to just stick with trying to figure out how to turn left real good…lol.

      Hi Daren,

I know you mentioned dirt ovals but right down the road from Woodleaf is one of the best asphalt tracks in the country.  Just a thought but you might want to try GoPro Motorplex in Mooresville. One big advantage to them  is there almost always open so you can go run/practice any day of the week that works with your schedule and they also have great local club races called the karting Challenge as well as National events. Good crowds and good fun that’s if you can handle 7/10ths of a mile of Pavement and turning both right and left :-)

      Check it out       www.gopromotorplex.com

      Hope to see you there.
