Hey roadies,
I’m a bit early on this one since NCK won’t be there until end of August, but here’s the questions:
I hear the buttonwillow track (big track) was repaved. Is it really smooth now?
Anyone know which layout/direction NCK plans to run and what gearing to use? This is for ’99 stock honda with RLV 4 pipe
Thanks in advance.

Hey Randy
I have run a 19/23 and had success there. You might also try 18/22. Wish I could run with you. I’m out with an injury. Good luck. -

Hi Todd,
Thanks for the tip on the gearing. I figured an 18/22 might be a good starting point.
The injury thing must be going around. I messed up at Streets of Willow and ended up in ER. Hope you get better soon and we’ll go drafting again (is that beer or main straight? can’t remember)

Randy,
Complete Achilles tendon rupture (second repair) work related. Should be there helping out. Those are my two favorite drafts ! Share the liquid kind after the race.

Looking forward to this race! Heads up it is on SUNDAY August 27th. The track has been completely repaved and should be smooth. I like the track layout including the “bus stop”. NCK will let us know which one before the race weekend. I better go get my kart finished!

It’s on Sunday Aug. 30th I hope?

Thanks Ray, I don’t know what calendar I was looking at!!!!
Track layout 13 in the clockwise direction. Can not wait to see how much smoother the track is after they fixed and paved it.
It’s time to get registered people! Who you gonna talk into coming with you?!

I just check Acuweather, says the high for the 30th 85, very nice!

What’s the gear ratio for a TAG Leopard at Button Willow?

August 23, 2015 at 3:27 pm #53279Larry StevensParticipant
Hi Todd, 16-79 or 16-80 for Tag Heavy!

Big thanks to Roger and the NCK team, we had another great day of racing at Buttonwillow. Thankfully, the weather was really mild, and turnout for stock moto classes was pretty good.
Randy, we ran the “13” configuration, going clockwise (down the main straight from sunset to sunrise). The track is very smooth going in this direction – there is only one small section that I would consider a bit rough, and we take that at a low speed. I ran an 18/22 all day with my ’99, and would probably start with the same next time we go to BW.
If you can arrange the time, you should try to make Thunderhill West in October – that track is like a 1.8 mile sprint track. Physically very demanding, lots of blind corners, a real challenge.

Hey Doug,
Wish I could have gone. Shoulder injury not quite recovered and couldn’t make very many laps in practice last week. I’ll check out your laps times…. I bet you are much faster than most of the cars on that config.

I am curious about the car times using this configuration and direction. There were some MC’s setting up in the pits as we were leaving, I’m assuming they were going to run on Monday. My times were OK, but Vince and Korody were the guys pedaling hard on Sunday!

I see your NCK races are posted on mylaps. You guys were running some really fast times.
So just for some fun here’s some car comparisons (same config).
Track records: Go down to 13 cw section. Keep in mind these are mostly pre-repave job, so not sure how that affects lap-times now.

A couple of typical track days. Some serious horsepower on some of these cars.

Nice Video Doug, I really enjoyed that layout. And it’s abut 300 miles closer for me than Thunderhill!

Glad NCK had a great race on the new pavement. NCK actually had the very first event on the track when first built on the brand new pavement. Awesome time then. I was running the Formula Swift Supercup series with Terry Ives and Chaz Lemmon. The 250’s were blistering front tires terribly on the new asphalt. Terry pulled out a big lead but barely won in the end because the right front had 2/3rds of the tread pull off the tire. I have never seen a kart shake so hard in my life but he kept the win. that was spring of 1996 by the way.
