Ive got a new to me mychron 4 with gps. I’ve had the Kart out twice and kart reads speed/mph I assume the gps unit is functioning. Says I need to update firmware. Bought the data key and loaded the cd it came with and connected the data key to the Mychron…still get the same update firmware message. Any advice would be much appreciated. Would really like to get some lap times

On a computer go to the Aim website and download the latest firmware, load it on to the data key, now put data key into Mychron 4 and it should update your firmware.
Done this 3 times and computer says data key has been updated
Read the firmware level off your gauge and confirm it is the latest version. If your have an IR or magnetic lap sensor, disconnect it from the gauge.

data key shows most updated version of the firmware when plugged into computer. Now when I connect data key to mychron, I get Error 0231 try again.
After the firmware downloaded on your pc, there should have been three options about how the datakey should update the gauge. Which option did you choose?

I’ve tried both top options. The data key is showing the latest April 14′ update. It did not show it prior. I’m still getting the same error message
Assumimg that you do not have your pc and the gauge both connected to the datakey and your gauge reads that it has 7.5 volts.
My suggestion would be to call AIM support with the gauge, datakey and GPS module in hand. If your equipment has to go in for repair, AIM’s turn around is usually fairing quick.
Another thought. Are you using a two port hub to connect your GPS to the M4?

I’ve tried connecting the data key to the pc port on the back of the mychron as well as hooking it up to the downstream gps port under my fairing. Both still reading the same error code.
To update the firmware for the M4, you must have a working datakey and seeing an error code is never a good sign. I’d guess that your datakey has an issue with its cable or with the connection on the gauge. You can inspect both connectors for debris or bent pins. I wouldn’t suggest using a friends datakey as you might damage it. Call AiM support.
There are many help videos on You Tube. This first link below goes over the firmware update (which you have all ready figured out) and second goes over connecting the GPS05 module to an M4.

Thank you for your help Tony. The two times I’ve had the kart out, the speed mph reading has worked so I’m assuming the gps itself is working. The data key is showing all the latest updates when hooked up to the laptop, mychron 4 still shows an outdated firmware version on it. Your idea of something wrong with the cable or pin on the data key certainly makes sense, I briefly hooked up the data key to my other mychron 4 on my other tag that does not have gps and it didn’t seem to do anything. Frustrating to say the least
Since you’ve probably haven’t seen a firmware update, after you have connected the datakey to the M4 and turned it on, there maybe 10 to 15 seconds before you’ll see the lights on the M4 begin to flash. The whole process my take over a minute. There is also a short delay after beginning to download data from the gauge. During the data download, there is one line across the middle of the screen that reads “downloading”.
You’ve been to the track a couple of times. Have you ever tried to import the data from the gauge into Race Studio 2?
