New forum, so I thought it would be appropriate to suggest that it is time to place your registration for the SCCA National Solo Championships.
As I look today, there are 18 names in KM, and three in KML. While that currently has us as the largest Modified Category class, it is still well short of where we have been the last half-dozen years. In total, we should have at least another ten.
There are a couple of more weeks before the registration fee increases from $165 to $308 on August 10, but waiting until the last minute can be risky.
I am always encouraged to see new names on the list. There was a time when I knew each and every kart autocrosser who made the Nationals, probably because I had recruited many of them :-D
Well seasoned or new to the sport, make it to Lincoln if you can. It is a BLAST!

Me and my co-driver who is currently not registered will there. Got to find him roughly 50 pounds of ballast to be legal.

One more try…am looking for an open seat that’s big enough for me – XL seat, pref ext. porch. Glad to cover my part of expenses. PM me for contact info… Thanks!

Won’t be making it this year, either. Did Spring and Summer Nats with Kieran. School starts a month earlier here, so Fall Nats will be hard to pull off. But I’ll be driving in a 24-hr race at VIR (ChumpCar) in a few weeks, so no pity parties for me…

A follow-on to my first post, and this applies to those who alre already on the list, as well as those who have not yet registered: In order to be in line for the contingency payout offered by Honda (and you know we ALL expect to get to the front of the finishing order) you need to have Honda as a part of the “Make” for your kart. Note that mine says “Honda Renspeed”.
Of course, the Kawi, Yammy, and ICC folks can ignore this note, but for the rest of you…. Get in and edit your entry to reflect Honda power, and be sure to register for the contingency by signing on via Member Login and going to your member page. You’ll find the contingency signup under the Events button.

Let me know if you need help with ballast. I’m sure Mike would not mind bringing along the lead seat liner that my son Colin has been using. I’ll check on how much it adds up to….

I bought some lead, I just have to make the insert. I finally got to weigh the kart since it is new to me and not thought about weighing it since I have only done locals in it. We found it to be quite heavy it was 220lbs with not much fuel in it. So I think we will be fine with what I have.
How did you construct the insert? I was thinking about forming the lead into small octagons and then tying them all together with solid steel wire, then making a foam padded cover for it. -

The lead Mike bought was sheet style. He used a spray glue to attach fabric, and just pushed it into the seat so that it formed the proper contour.

My son Kevin Teague is signed up for KM. He is 17, and was running in JA last year. He really likes the shifter kart a lot better than the JA. He is co-driving with a friend of mine locally and still getting used to all the shifting. Soon I need to take him out to a track day.

Just a few days to go, and we are at 22 Open class drivers, and 4 Ladies. The general goal is to stay above 30 total, so we are still a few short of the optimum minimum.
Has anyone been able to arrange a co-drive for my old buddy Larry Andrews? XL seat and Extended porch will get you a very good co-driver.
Speaking of co-drivers, I might need one myself. The usual super-guy, JT McClintock, is not running the Nationals this year. I don’t mind running by myself, but there is one reason that I could use a tire-warmer/fast guy in the seat. I am 180/5’9, fit great in the ML Tillett.

I just got permission by the wife to possibly go to my first Nats. I am trying to see if anyone has an open seat. I am working on getting a ride out, but I really want to participate in KM! I will likely (hopefully) have a new job next year, this may be my best chance to go to Nats. Let me know if anyone can accommodate my request so I can get in on the early registration.
Also looking for a possible place to stay. Non-smoker, non-snorer. Just need a place to put a sleeping bag down on.Email at sccamustangcobra AT comcast.net with any opportunities.
Thank you in advance!

Folks,
The mysterious “Josh” is my pal “TonyKartMan” Josh West from the DC area. We think we have hooked him up with a ride.
Note that for a big event like The Nationals, I’d be leery of putting some newb into a seat just to make numbers and add participants in the class. However, when someone you are familiar with, especially one with plenty of shifter kart experience, is looking for a seat, I hope you will do as I always have, and share your machine if possible.
As Jason Vehige puts it, there is nothing like “The Crack Pipe” for getting potential drivers hooked on KM in autocross. While that initial experience is great at a laid-back local event, for Nationals I’d want someone with more seat time. There are exceptions. Enter one experienced autocrosser, Michael Casino. He impressed the hell outta me at the Toledo Pro, only his second event in KM. Duck, this is water. Make a splash. Have fun. Eh, hmmm…. Seems like you have some natural affinity for this….. ;-)

Currently at 26 open + 4 for the L class gives KM the largest entry in the Modified category. Great Stuff.
Anyone else? For most normal paying entrants, registration closes at midnight tonight, when the fee nearly doubles. There are always a few who pay the extra tariff, but I would not. High enough as it is!
I see the name of an old class Champion on the list…. Will wonders never cease? Tom Harrington, welcome back from wherever you have been. Now if Dave Hironaka suddenly signed up, I’d likely have to pick my jaw up more than once. Dan Cyr is off running in BM. That should be worth watching. I don’t see Mr. Andrews….. in or not, Larry? Quite a number of the “Old Guard” from the Forbes days would be fun to get back in some year. No sense listing the names.
The countdown begins.
Kart in parts. Uh-oh…..

Yeah, the dashboard/cp for this forum is not very user friendly, and is even worse on an iPhone when I had to re-register due to the new forum. I’ve updated it accordingly after being berated by Alan via email, PM, and a phone call. Message received! ;-)
Yes, thank to the kindness of the Nut Pack, I will be in a kart of some sort. I am hoping it will also have a motor on it. ;-)
My first Nats. And my first Pro Solo Finale! And, I know I will be going to Grandma’s for karaoke as well! All is good!

Speaking of Nationals, are any of the Garfield clan running this year?
-
August 10, 2013 at 7:36 pm #6678Alan SheidlerParticipant
Not in any of the K classes that I can see…..
Have not searched the rest of the 1K plus spots for a Garfield name, but Brian is not the quiet type usually. If he were to be there, we’d probably know. I almost expected to see Julian run Lisa’s KM kart this year; I think the BoD agreed that kids like him are ok to run one.

Alan,
I don’t think the “Julian” rule (15-year olds running KM) goes into effect until at least next season.
I may take advantage of the Julian rule next season if Jackson is ready.

Hey gang! Sheesh, had to re-register as the new site has no record of me…
We took this year off (first Nationals missed for me since 2000) for Julian to go Club Racing with the SCCA. He’s currently 2nd in points in a 30+car class with 2 wins and 7 or 8 podiums. :-)
If the rule passes for next year, Julian may likely run the shifter for some events, possibly co-driving with Lisa at Pro Solos. We started prepping an E36 for STX as Julian’s everyday driver and the family autocross car and I’ve been developing it through the second half of the season. Lisa just drove it for the first time this past weekend and did great. It’s a huge class this year at Nationals and even locally for us we had 20 at the last event!
We’ll be missing the trip out as it’s a lot of fun for us, and we wish everyone the best of luck and hope you have good weather and a great time. We’ll see you in 2014…

I’ll be there! But not in the kart. I’m driving in FSP. I think next year will be the year I take the kart to nationals.
