New Regional Series Established for British Columbia

Three tracks in British Columbia have come together to develop a new regional championship – the BC Summer Sprint Series. The series will take place on three separate double header events, one at each facility. The BC Summer Sprint Series is designed around allowing all competitors in the region for a place to race against one another on a level playing field while also offering ‘in-class’ awards for the popular national and international programs.

Those clubs/tracks involved include the Vancouver Island Karting Association, the West Coast Kart Club at the Greg Moore Raceway in Chilliwack, BC; and the KARTPLEX at Area 27 Motorsports Complex in Oliver, BC.

The Vancouver Island Karting Association dates back to 1970, then known as the Capital City Kart Club. After bouncing around to different facilities, the organization lost its home track and sat dormant from 2003 up until last year. The club has grown from just three members to over 130 in a little over a year. VIKA now calls the Vancouver Island Motorsport Circuit in Duncan, BC while also hosting oval races at the Westshore Motorsports Park in 2022. VIKA is set to host the opening event of the BC Summer Sprint Series on May 7-8.

One of the more historic kart tracks in Canada is the Greg Moore Raceway, home of the West Coast Kart Club in Chilliwack, BC. Many national and international events have been held at the 1.2km circuit near the USA/Canada border. The WCKC is scheduled to host the second event of the BC Summer Sprint Series on August 20-21.

“We at WCKC are excited to be part of the BC Summer Sprint Series,” commented Erik Gerlof, President of the West Coast Kart Club. “The goal of these series is to bring racers together in British Columbia Canada and Crown the BC Champions participating in the series at 3 great tracks and karting clubs in BC. They are all top-rated facilities that will give us some good karting!”

KARTPLEX is a new facility for western Canada karting. Located at the Area 27 Motorsports Park, the KARTPLEX was designed by Formula One champion and Indianapolis 500 winner Jacques Villeneuve. The opening weeks and months were about building a solid arrive and drive program with their rental kart program. Now, KARTPLEX is home to the Racelab providing a full-service kart shop on site, including a North America race team. September 3-4 is the date for the BC Summer Sprint Series finale at KARTPLEX.

“We are excited to see our sport really taking off in Western Canada,” stated Craig Finer of the KARTPLEX. “The BC Summer Sprint Series offer kart racers and teams from the region and beyond a challenging series held at two brand new state of the art facilities and the legendary Greg Moore Raceway. The series will showcase three very different race tracks and three fantastic venues. The KARTPLEX/Racelab team are just pumped to be a part of it!”

The general rule format for all three events will follow the 2022 West Coast Kart Club Rules Structure. Specific rules and details surrounding the points structure and fees is to be released in the coming days. Registration for each event will be handled by the host club/facility.
