Product Spotlight: Stilo Helmets

It’s pretty easy to see, at any track on any given weekend, that Stilo helmets are becoming more and more visible in North American karting. Manufactured at Stilo’s headquarters in Pedrengo, Italy, the products have been officially imported and distributed by Simpson Performance Products, Inc since the beginning of 2018. Stilo provides a full range of helmets for karters, as well as those moving upward into car racing. Stilo captured its first SKUSA SuperNationals victory in 2018 with Leonardo Lorandi, and is the brand used by IndyCar drivers Tony Kanaan and Patricio O’Ward.

ST5 CMR (Kart Specific)

Stilo ST5 CMR

The ST5 CMR carries a Snell/FIA CMR 2016 rating. It is designed specifically for the youth karter 12 and under, whose neck is not yet developed enough to support the weight of an adult helmet. It has all the same features of the ST5 auto range, with replaceable cheek pads and crown pads so it can be custom fitted to the wearers’ head. All the same shields and accessories that fit the ST5 CMR will fit the KRT and auto helmets, meaning the user can keep their shields, screw kits, etc and use them when they have grown out of the CMR and adopt an adult-sized ST5 helmet. All Stilo shields have an anti-fog coating that is second to none. With all of the venting and special anti-fog shield, the shields simply do not fog. It also features a double-locking shield mechanism that can be locked fully closed or cracked for extra venting. Along with the additional chin and top vents, the ST5 CMR has some of the best venting in the industry. The same technology Stilo uses in their F1 helmets is used to construct the CMR. It’s low weight is delivered by using a Kevlar/Composite construction. The ST5 CMR is available in sizes 54, 55, 57 and 59. The ST5 CMR is available in matte black w/black interior, white w/black interior, white w/red interior or white w/blue interior. Color interiors are a $30 upgrade. MSRP on the ST5 CMR is $549.

ST5 KRT (Kart Specific)

Stilo ST5 KART

The ST5 KRT carries a Snell SK2015 rating. It is designed specifically for the adult karter. It also has all the same features of the ST5 auto range, with replaceable cheek pads and crown pads so it can be custom fitted to the wearer’s head. Just like the CMR, all the shields and accessories will fit the Stilo ST5 auto range. It features the same double-position shield lock as all Stilo ST5 models, extra venting, anti-fog shields and Stilo engineering to make it the lightest Snell K rated helmet available. The ST5 KRT is available in sizes 54, 55, 57, 59, 60, 61, 63 and 64. The ST5 KRT is available in white w/black interior, white w/red interior or white w/blue interior. Color interiors are a $30 upgrade. MSRP on the ST5 KRT is $649.

ST5 FN CARBON 8859

The ST5 Carbon 8859 is for the discerning karter who insists on wearing the LIGHTEST helmet. While it can be used in auto racing as well, it is allowed for adult karting competitors worldwide. It retains all the same custom fitting options as the karting line and then some. The cheek pads are 2-piece, accepting ear pillows or ear cups that have spacers to increase or decrease the pressure around the users ears. All the same shields and accessories are available for the ST5 auto line as the ST5 karting line. You will not find a lighter option in this price range. This is not a carbon/composite helmet, it is a carbon helmet and uses the same technology as Stilo F1 and IndyCar helmets. The ST5 Carbon 8859 is available in sizes 54, 55, 57, 59, 60, 61, 63 and 64. MSRP on the ST5 Carbon 8859 is $1915.

ST5 FN Zero FIA 8860-2018ABP

While Stilo does make a lesser expensive ST5 Carbon 8860 model (still lighter than all the competitions 8860 offerings), the Zero is the ‘MacDaddy’. It is the lightest 8860-2018 and 8860-2018ABP helmet in the universe. With the 8860-2018 version weighing in at 1200 grams (small shell size), there is no lighter auto helmet available. The FIA 8860-2018ABP refers to the new standard for F1 which provides ‘advanced ballistic protection’ incorporating the added strength of the previously-required Zylon panel mounted to the shield, now incorporated into the shell of the helmet. The top of the eyeport on the new ST5 FIA 8860-2018ABP ZERO is 10mm lower than other models.  It does require special shields to accommodate the smaller eyeport, but has the same double locking shield mechanism and accepts all the same accessories as other Stilo ST5 helmets. It is used by Valtteri Bottas and Lance Stroll in F1. It is also being used by Formula E Stilo competitor Felipe Nasr. Stilo was the first to meet this new standard, the first to be tested on an F1 weekend and the first to win an F1 race where the standard was required. At present, Stilo competitors Tony Kanaan and Patrico O’Ward are the ONLY IndyCar drivers to be using the FIA 8860-2018ABP specification in IndyCar competition. Unpainted the ST5 8860-2018ABP can be recognized by its smaller eyeport and gold Stilo logos. At current time, it must be special ordered. It is available with a variety of different interior colors including black, white, red, blue and green.  It is currently the only FIA 8860-2018ABP helmet to be certified in the entire size range of 54, 55, 57, 59, 60, 61, 63 and 64. MSRP on the ST5 FIA 8860-2018ABP Zero is $5995.
