Race Report: ROK Sonoma presented by Sanzaru – Round Eight
2018 Finale featured a solid finish in all classes
The weather for this last race weekend of the 2018 ROK Sonoma season felt more like a summer day than the beginning of Fall. Two classes had the overall championship on the line and several other top championship positions were still to be decided, ensuring there was a lot at stake! Sanzaru Bucks of $100/$50/$30 were awarded to the Micro Feature Class, and $50 were given to the First place driver in each of the remaining classes. The Sanzaru Bucks from this race will roll over to the 2019 season and can be used toward entry fees next year.
Micro ROK was our Feature Class, with a field future stars! Going into the last Main of the season, Anthony White had the Micro ROK title all but wrapped up. It would have been hard to tell, however, by the aggressive he competed, putting his Kart on pole in qualifying. White then checked out in both of the Pre-Mains, leaving Casey Moyer and Nico Sarphati to battle it out for second place ahead of Ryder Byrd, closely followed by last year’s Sanzaru Kid Kart Champion Andrew Freire, and Cypress Andruss. Cypress has shown impressive development after moving up to Micro when this year’s Kid Kart class faltered.
In the Main, White again began to pull away from the field soon after the start but, this time he had company as Moyer was hanging with him. A few laps in, Moyer managed to find a way around but couldn’t make the pass stick and gave the lead back shortly after. Moyer kept his number 31 on the back bumper of White’s machine and eventually got by him again. Casey would go on to lead most of the race before coming onto the main straight a little too wide, leaving the door open for White, who was quick to take advantage of the mistake and slide past Moyer as the two passed the white flag. Moyer tried to recover and answer one last time as they came to the line on the last lap, but he ran out of race track and White took the checkered flag with Moyer’s front wheels even with Whites motor. It was an exciting end to the 2018 Micro ROK season as well as a fitting finale for the day’s featured class.
