Musgrave Battles Adversity in Arizona
After a challenging weekend, Billy Musgrave would score top-10 finishes at rounds 3 and 4 of the 2018 SKUSA Pro Tour.
Musgrave and the Musgrave Racing Company Team came into the PKRA circuit looking to build on podium finishes from the first two rounds in New Orleans but would battle adversity in Phoenix to score critical points and keep his SKUSA Pro Tour championship hopes alive.
In the PSL Karting X30 class Musgrave would experience a weekend to forget as bad luck would sideline the 2017 Supernationals winner on both days, leading to consecutive DNF’s. The end result was disappointing because the California native felt progress was being made on the Mad Old Nut/Mad Croc X30 machine. “The whole season has been a battle in the X30 class but even if our results don’t show it, we have been making progress,” said Musgrave. “We didn’t get the results we wanted today but we’ll regroup and be ready for Fontana.”
Musgrave would then turn his attention to the Musgrave MRC S1 Pro Stock Honda division where his MRC/Aluminos shifter kart has been on pace all season long. Day one would see Musgrave qualify in the 6th position but a problem in his heat would force him to start from the back in the main. In the final, Musgrave would put in a potentially championship-saving drive that saw him charge all the way back to the 4th position. When action resumed on Sunday, Musgrave put his MRC/Aluminos on the pole and claimed the heat win, unchallenged. However, an issue in the main would relegate him to sixth. While it wasn’t a weekend up to his standards, Musgrave knows every point is critical. “It’s a bit disappointing to not get on the box in either race but with a field this tight, wins and podiums are hard to come by,” said Musgrave. “Everyone in the field is going to have a bad day at some point. We didn’t have a great weekend and still got fourth and sixth. Making the most of your worst days is key to staying in the title race.”
The SKUSA Pro Tour will get the summer off before resuming on August 10-12 in New Castle, Indiana. The next SKUSA event for Team MRC will be the California Prokart Challenge event at Calspeed Karting Facility in Fontana, California on June 1-2.
