EKN Constructors Championship – July 9

Tony Kart lead remains with six brands in strong fight for P2

The 2015 season is at the halfway point of the year and the transition now begins toward preparing to close out the championship chases. The EKN Constructors Championship is more than halfway done, with 28 events completed and only 15 still to go. From the beginning, the Tony Kart brand has led the way and has all but wrapped up its fifth title thanks in no small part to significant numbers. The fight for second is becoming quite the battle, however, as six different brands have a chance at earning the vice-champion position.

Tony Kart logoThe majority of Tony Kart points have come from the Rotax-focused events, including nearly 600 points from the winter programs of the Rotax Challenge of the America and Florida Winter Tour, along with the Florida Pro Kart Series. Tony Kart leads the regional programs along with the Superkarts! USA and US Open sections of the EKN CC. The only series that Tony Kart has not amassed the highest total is in the WKA Manufacturers Cup Series and United States Pro Kart Series programs. In the last six races that were added to the point calculations, Tony Kart was the highest point earner in only two events (California PKC Round Four and US Open Round Two).

One brand that has beaten Tony Kart in one section of the EKN CC standings is Top Kart. With the highest point total at the WKA events, 42% of Top Kart’s total has come from that series. Top Kart is scoreless in the Texas ProKart Challenge, Can-Am Karting Challenge and the US Open. The points that it accumulated at the recent WKA and USPKS events moved it ahead of the CRG brand for second. CRG only scored points at three of the six races added, earning points at California PKC, Texas PKC, and the US Open. CRG is just 15 points out of second, so the battle is far from over.

BirelART, the ‘new’ kid on the block, remains in fourth. The brand earned points at all six events, however, the highest total was just 16 points, placing second to Tony Kart at the event. Hot on the its tail is the rising Merlin chassis. At the USPKS program, Merlin has the highest total thanks to its latest event, earning 54 points at the Shawano weekend, riding on the strength of four wins by Brandon Lemke. Merlin also scored the highest total at the WKA Manufacturers Cup Series event at Badger, defending the home turf of Wisconsin and Franklin Motorsports.

Kosmic slips to the sixth despite the highest total at the latest Can-Am Karting Challenge event. Praga has also slipped to seventh, remaining as the sixth and final contender for the runner-up spot thus far if it can close out the season with strong results, as the numbers continue to grow for the revamped Praga North America operation and its dealers.

The addition of the Cadet categories has helped to increase the ranking of certain brands, including the Benik chassis. Up two spots from 10th, Benik earned a number of victories at the recent USPKS event in Shawano. FA Kart remains in the ninth position, earning a minimal amount of points in three of the last six events. Climbing up to the 10th spot is French-manufactured Sodi Kart. A strong following in the Texas area helped it earn the highest total of the recent Texas ProKart Challenge event, advancing five positions in the standings to bump Coyote out of the top-10.
