2015 EKN Chassis Showroom: Birel ART
New era in the sport begins in 2015 as one of the biggest brands merges with reputable operation
EKN is excited to offer a new editorial series for our readers – our ‘Chassis Showroom’. Over the next couple of months, we will be highlighting many chassis manufacturers and the importers / dealers who are responsible for making these karts available to the North American karting community. The market is filled with models for all levels of competition, from four-cycle to shifterkarts, and the new offerings are really great looking.
Importer: MRP Motorsport
Just as is the case with so much of the karting community, MRP Motorsport is a family-based operation. Garry Lobaugh began karting with his family in the 1980s, in southern Michigan, running from their Chicago-based home. The family’s love for the sport eventually grew into a passion and a business, as Garry became involved with the ownership of Kristy’s Rolling Green Raceway in Michigan. From there, a relationship with the Birel brand was formed, and MRP Motorsport was launched, importing the top Italian brand. Over the last few decades, MRP Motorsport has been responsible for the strong expansion of the Birel dealer network, and building the team resume that includes a long list of talented drivers won races and championship aboard the brand. From 2008 to 2011, Birel and MRP won the Manufacturers Trophy in the World Karting Association Manufacturers Cup Series.
Featured Dealer: 3G Kart Racing
Based in the Houston, Texas metropolitan area, 3G Kart Racing has been one of the driving forces of the Birel brand on the national karting scene for the past few seasons. 3G is led by Dave Pauly, who started karting at the age of 50, and turned his passion for the sport into a business venture in 2006. During the 2013 season, 3G was a championship-winning team in the Superkarts! USA Pro Tour with Jordon Musser in S4 Master Stock Moto. 3G is also a major supporter of the Gulf Coast Kartways in Katy, Texas, along with the Texas ProKart Challenge series that features Superkarts! USA and United States Rotax Max Challenge regional competition.
Featured Dealer: Cambrian Go-Karts
Only open for the last 10 years, Cambrian Go-Karts brings loads of experience to the northern California karting scene. Led by Don and Donald Durbin, the father-son duo became well-established figures in the karting community prior to opening up their business. With Cambrian Go-Karts, they are now able to share their love of the sport and use their experience to bring others into karting. A long-time Birel dealer, Cambrian is embracing the new Birel ART product, and is scheduled to be at a number of major West Coast events in 2015, all while keeping its core regional and club trackside support program going strong.
Chassis: Birel ART
2015 is the start of a new era for the brand, with the merger of the historic Birel marque and the newer ART GP effort, creating Birel ART. The Birel name came into the sport during the early years of karting, as the Sala family developed their first karts in late 50s. They would go on to earn numerous world karting championships and major victories all over the world. The ART brand was founded in the winter of 2004/2005 around their junior formula open wheel car programs. The organization eventually developed a karting program in 2011. Success came quickly for the brand, earning a number of victories throughout Europe. Now, the combination is producing the new Birel ART name and ready for a big impact in 2015.
The chassis that has already gained major victories is the CRY30-S7 (32/CH/20). Designated for shifterkart racing and DD2 action, the frame has already delivered great results with the early production model scoring a huge SuperNationals victory in the KZ2 category, and the same base chassis opening the 2015 Florida Winter Tour season with a sweep of the DD2 and DD2 Masters divisions. There is now a larger range of ride-height adjustment for the rear axle to increase both braking efficiency and traction.
The RY30 chassis has been one of the best all-around for both Junior and Senior classes, in 100cc, TaG and Rotax competition. The new RY30-S7 (32/CH/20) model is even more versatile, allowing for a wide range of tire compounds and varying classes, while maintaining ease of set-up and successful results.
For the Junior and lower-horsepower Senior divisions, the AR28Y is the newest model that is ready for the track. With its on-going development and the 1010mm wheelbase, the chassis is the perfect size for the new Mini Max rule package. The chassis works well for 100cc categories, in addition to the growing Briggs & Stratton LO206 division that is growing throughout North America.
