Series News: Dominating Performance by Colin Braun in Stock Car Steel/SRI Championship Series Round One

Stock Car Steel-SRI MMX logoColin Braun, Denny Hamlin, Drew Herring and Mark Nahrstedt all took home victories in Round One of the Stock Car Steel/SRI five-week championship series at Mooresville Motorplex (MMX) on Wednesday night. The NASCAR Spotter’s Rental Kart race was one of the many racing highlights of the evening which included TaG Senior, TaG Masters and Rental Kart League Light and Heavy division racing action.

Stock Car Steel/SRI Series Round One – TaG Senior Division
It was series regular, Colin Braun, who took the win in the TaG Senior division 25-lap final race against a tough field of 15 entrants. Jack Weprin led the way early on, but Braun pulled an exciting cross-over move in the hairpin turn that put him past both Weprin and defending RACERSITES Cup TaG Senior Champion, Jason Bowles.

Braun continued to log 48.079-second laps and eventually pulled out to a 6.801-second margin of victory over Bowles. Tyler Cooke completed the TaG Senior podium by crossing the line in third position.

TaG Masters Division
After returning to the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series two weeks ago, Denny Hamlin made his return to karting boldly-known tonight by winning the TaG Masters division 20-lap final race. The TaG Masters race proved to be one of the best races of the night with several lead changes and hard racing for the top spot.

By lap three, there was already a three-way battle for second position between Jeremy Fuller, Max Papis and Chuck Gafrarar, while Chuck Tate checked out on the field. Hamlin watched patiently from the fifth position and showed his race craft by passing all three in one move while they were focused on their battle for second.

Hamlin eventually diminished Tate’s lead, but the two drivers collided exiting the hairpin, allowing Fuller to sneak by for the win. However, Fuller was disqualified following post-race inspection and the win was given to Hamlin. Tate and Randy Sampson finished in second and third, respectively.

Rental Kart League Light Division
Under the new Rental Kart League format for the Stock Car Steel/SRI Series, it was Drew Herring who grabbed the Light division win overall. The new format evens the playing field by reducing kart selection advantages and awarding points for three heat races, instead of just for a final race. The driver with the highest combined total of heat race points wins overall for the night.

Herring won two of the three heat races, but it was Evan York who stole the third heat race victory in a photo finish against Slow Stig, Ross Chastain and Ford Martin. The best lap time of the event was a 62.556 by Herring.

Rental Kart League Heavy Division –
The Rental Kart League Heavy Division adopted the new, three heat race format as well for the Stock Car Steel/SRI Championship Series. It was Mark Nahrstedt, RACERSITES Cup Heavy division runner-up in the championship standings, who took home two of the heat wins, giving him the points win overall for Round One. Michael Vollbrecht won Heat Two. The best lap time of the event was a 63.360-second lap by Nahrstedt.

NASCAR Spotter’s Rental Kart Race
Fourteen of the NASCAR industry’s eagle-eyed spotters tried their hand behind the wheel of our rental karts in a 10-lap race as part of the Stock Car Steel/SRI Series opening ceremonies. The spotters were gridded according to where the NASCAR driver they spot for ranks in the current points standings. It was Dale Earnhardt Jr.’s spotter, TJ Majors, who grabbed the win in a white-knuckled, close finish against Juan Pablo Montoya’s spotter, Derek Kneeland, who had to settle for second position. David Green, Bobby Labonte’s spotter, completed the spotter’s race podium in third position. Huge thanks to all of the spotters who came out to race tonight and put on a great show for the fans!
