Team News: Checkered Motorsports/PCR – USPKS Mooresville Report

The first round of the United States Pro Karting Series was a success for PCR and the Checkered Motorsports team. Displaying speed in both the wet and dry conditions, the PCR chassis were able to come home with a win in Rookie sportsman and quick pace in the Junior and Senior division.

J.P. Southern Jr. had quick pace all weekend. A disappointing qualifying run on Saturday meant a ninth spot start for the heats. The first heat Southern Jr. would get shuffled back to the 19th spot. The second heat he rebounded finishing in sixth. In the main event, the PCR cadet was on rails as he came from 11th to a 5th place finish. Sunday’s action was in a complete wet track conditions. After a podium finish on Saturday, the team was looking for more hardware to bring back home. In the rainy conditions, he did not hesitate to make his presence. After some fine tuning by the checkered motorsports staff and engine builder Daniel Woltjer, Southern Jr. took no time to put his PCR cadet back on top to finish in the top 5 in both heats. The opening laps of the main event saw JP out in the third spot. However, contact ended his day and recorded a DNF.

Stacked with a solid 38 entries, the Leopard Pro class lived up to its hype. Oliver Scigliano, Robert Bujdoso, and Andrew Bujdoso contested in the Pro division. Rookie Andrew Bujdoso led the way for the team on Saturday’s actions qualifying in 23rd. Both R. Bujdoso and Scigliano had a disappointing run starting in 33rd and 35th for Scigliano. After being in the dry for the first two heats, the Final was under wet conditions. This allowed R. Bujdoso to move up as high as the 12th spot in the final until brake failure caused him to fall back to 17th . Younger brother A. Bujdoso got involved in the first lap carnage and retired. Sunday’s action saw the PCR’s in p5 and p8 for qualifying. A. Bujdoso, starting in fifth in both heats would get shuffled around in heat 1 to finish 14th. The second heat looked to be more promising for the rookie until a driver error caused another DNF while running in fourth. R. Bujdoso and Scigliano both would move up in their heats to start fifth and 23rd in the main. The 12 lap main event saw five time national champion R. Bujdoso lead the way. Running as high as fourth, the veteran made a costly mistake which caused him to lose a pair of positions to finish sixth. A. Bujdoso followed with a 12th while Scigliano ran as high as 15th until a driver error made him settle with a DNF for the weekend.

“As a team we collectively performed up to our standards,” explained Checkered Motorsports owner Csaba Bujdoso. “I’m really happy with where our program is going right now. From the sportsman class to seniors, we had quick pace in the PCR on wet or dry conditions.”

The talk of the weekend was Rookie driver Nic Sheppard. Running with the North Polestar karting team, the young driver put his PCR on pole by .517 tenths on Saturday. Sheppard would go on to dominate the field by winning all of the heats and the main event.
