Jim, can you explain your theory? here you have 2 different turbo laps (9 and 10) against non-turbo lap 6. Drop in RPM after turbo is not inability to handle it, but inability to finish pass on top of Fanchio turn in Monticello.

Ihor , imo, you got turbo....but , when you did was there enough fuel to supply the "need"?
Keep digging....You may wanta get an ex. temp sensor in a used pipe to help in testing.
Angus, It wouldn't matter what you chose to "race". The only difference in turbo in mini max VS jr is , how long, how early, and when would it best help in lap times.
The only form of racing that may stand the chance of "being equal" ( with out hard work and testing) may be soap box racing. And even in soap box racing I bet they use some trick wheel bearing lube and maybe special car wax, after testing. |

Lets say the exit speed was lower, others will have higher RPM and will close on me (5 kart lengths closer). Now, both are at 12500, fixed gear, same speed, same distance between karts. There is only 1 difference - kart with good exit speed had 12500 RPM 2 seconds longer and it helped him to shorted the distance between karts.
Having exactly the same engines, both karts will reach whatever RPM they can and keep the same distance. Where am I wrong? |
Do you have GPS or better yet, speed sensor? Look at the AMOUNT of time it takes to go from 10,500 to 11,000...write it down....11,000 to 11,500...write it down....11,500 to 12,000 WID...
The kart that had the camera on it was so stuck in the rear that he didn't need 1/2 of the exit run off area out of the bowl... We needed it ALL. |

Jim, I'm not asking you how to get turbo, I'm just saying the fact that it is exists will eventually ruin the class.
I remember few years ago it was not an issues, there was nobody passing like crazy out of nowhere. You have to have very good driver to make a noticeable change in lap time, but even a less experienced driver can make a pass and it is not easy to pass back in Mini. |

ihor, you need to go to work with ron from Engine Services. he's got it figured out, but you and him will have to do some engine testing getting your motor right ($). or better yet, just come to jrs with us!
like jim said, it's very important the time it takes in building rpm's. that's the big difference in a 'minimax' motor compared to a stock one. our really good one jumps 100 rpm's in fractions of a second after 12000 rpm's. and remember what i showed you (from what i learned from OGP)at new castle with it on the stand. you gotta get that jump almost instantly or your jetting isn't right.
jim, i haven't heard that before about turbo in jrs, but if so, then ihor and i are totally wrong. if that's the case, then it's just part of it, just like learning to tune the chassis. but i was under the impression it was only a minimax thing, and others who i assumed know have supported that thought. and with jrs not being fixed gears, i wouldn't think it would make such a huge difference. but i'll be the first to say i don't know much. hope to meet you at the track some time, jim and see the kids race, richie (angus' dad) _________________ www.angushunt.com |

I guess they could bring it down to 11,000 rpm...another tooth on the driver? 10 less on the rear sprocket?....
The comer K80 cadet only turns 12,500 and No turbo! They do turn more without a chain. |

I dont normally comment on any topics but since work is very slow at work due to no snow birds in fl, which doesnt do well for the car business and this topic or question has been around for years. i would have to agree with jim, turbo has alot to do with what the kart does coming out of the corner especially at 103rd st. even watching the video that ihor posted you can see when he exits the bowl properly without feathering the throttle the kart makes big gains on the kart in front of him. i think the phrase goes loose is fast if im not mistaking |

Getting turbo in a Mini Max is an "art" so to speak....But it is like riding a bike, once you get it and understand how you got it, you should be able to hit it at every track.
I didn't read through all the posts but in the junior ranks, you do have turbo at a certain point. If you can get it or not is another question. It happens between 12200 and 12500 RPM....Where the ignition curves change. Have your jetting of slightly and you won't get over that mark and if you do, it won't feel like any speed gained.
If you go and look at some of the junior races from the Florida Winter Tour that are online, you will be able to see the juniors that get turbo. You will also be able to see the guy that gets it first and clean as he is usually leading.
It is hard to out drive someone in a Rotax.....You need to out tune them.
Back to working on the Yamaha "Turbo" now.... _________________ Mike Maurini

Looks like the folks at Raceway Motorsports has is figured out as well, and my customers did not have to spend a lot of $$$$$$$, just had to stick to the plan.
By the way we are working on the magic with our Junior engine program as well.

>>>12200 and 12500 RPM....Where the ignition curves change.<<
I thought the same for the MM too. Same motor just no restrictors...right? Yet, in my very brief perusal of the Orange Rotax Manual it says RPM at the top is controlled by the pipe on the JR/MM motor. (Note, also, in the manual all perf graphs end around 12.5K rpm for the JR/MM). The manual also goes on to say, in so many words, that if one uses a leaner main than advertised more RPM will be gained - which everyone knows for the Sr motor.
So is that all there is to Turbo - Lean and Loose? Low roll resistance?

(That was some really good driving on the you tube vid.....to think they are all 9-12yo) |

I hope you are joking.
In Rotax driving and chassis tuning are much more important than engine tuning.
I've seen countless people complain about their engine, myself included, (mainly complaining about bottom-end), when in reality their chassis is not set up correctly or they have the wrong driving style/line.
In order to be fast on the straights you must come out of the corners fast.
Also don't forget about the huge affect of the draft in the mini and junior classes. |
