hrm, I mounted mine to the motor at the hoisting point.... got a Honda Coil bracket from ebay and used some rubber bits and clevises from Home Depot to dangle it in a good spot that is well grounded and absorbant

so the new coil arrived yesterday, and it's not the same as what I had. I ordered the stock '99 coil, and it is much smaller than the one that I had been running. Does this matter? (other than I have to fabricate a new mount).

just to finish the story, it was the coil. And the short one seems to work just fine. Back in the saddle!

Yeeha! Glad you got it back up and blasting.
Not sure when Honda changed to the smaller coil. My '96 motor has the bigger one, the '99's I have seen use the smaller. Slightly different connection styles, otherwise interchangeable.
About coils, and this is ALL IMHO: Bolting them tight to the top of the engine is asking for trouble. The ultrasonic vibration buzzing through the head means to me it is no place for an electical device, or anything which is not a slug of aluminum or rubber. That said, I have used a longer intake bolt with three nylock nuts (two to hold the coil end between steel and rubber washers, and one to hold the intake tight) and a seperate very stiff (8GA?) wire bolted to the other end and the motor to act as a ground. The whole deal then remains flexible, and allows a fairly short plug wire.
I also think that they can be damaged by water infiltration. The dirtbike location is up under the tank or seat. pretty much away from water unless the whole bike takes a dunk. I think it best to seal the openings between the plastic outer coating and the center bar/plates with silicone. I used black so it is not noticeable.
You bringing that sucker to Topeka? Garfield won't feel right without all of the usual DC crowd around.

not looking good, Alan. Work circumstances are a big reason. Hopefully 2007 will let me do more Nat'l level events. But if Brian and Mike do well enough in Topeka, I'll have my own Nat's every month locally!
