I originally posted this in "Road racing" but received no replies...maybe I'll have better luck here. Thanx.
I'm currently road racing Yamaha Limited lite with an open pipe at 330 lbs. and have been looking at getting into an 80 for next year (I know it's the middle of summer, but the series I'm racing only has 3 races left). After thinking, looking, and being the kind of guy that I am, I have to ask the question: Would it be a dumb move to skip the 80 route and go straight to a 125? Would it be too much kart? Also, what kind of changes are made to 125's between road tracks and sprint tracks? It takes quite a bit of work to get things changed around with my KT. I've thought that if I went this route I could road race and run the Willow Springs kart track so I could get in a little more track time.
Opinions please. |

As far as setup, you change the gears and go run. But...
A 125 is fairly brutal on a sprint track. An 80 is far more user friendly in that venue.
But then you're a much younger man than I ! |

I can take it! I'm looking for something that needs very slight changes to make it competitive on both types of tracks. Also, as you know, 125's aren't too popular in Nor-Cal (for sprinting), so I was thinking about hitting some So-Cal tracks (closer anyways). From what I understand, there are far more 125's down there. I'm headed to Willow Springs this Sat. to check it out. Does anyone else have any comments about how big the shock would be coming from a open pipe Yamaha and going to a 125? Surely I'm not the only guy to go this route....I guess I should mention that I've driven an 80 shifter and a Rotax Max and loved the speed...I've just heard that the 125's are soooo much faster that it may be a little much for someone coming out of the Yamaha pipe class. |

Well, I'd really rather you bought one of my 80s, but if it's speed you're after, go for the 125.
Next time we're out, look me up. You can take mine for a spin. |
