| I have a 1989 yz 80 motor that I'm thinking of using for my son to run in a shifter class. It has a new top and bottom end and the trans is in good cond. Do you think it will be down on hp to much to make it semi competitive at a club level? |

| I just walked in the door from running my 92 YZ 80 at Perris. After solving the problem of throttle off sticking and the proper pipe I think it is or would be competetive at the club level. RM80 carb is almost a must. I would be glad to help you out with any knowledge I have gained. |

Hi Gary,
I have just moved up to 125 recently but I sprint raced a YZ80 for about a year on a local level here in PDX. I think if your expectations are realistic and you understand that 95% of your field is running a Honda with much more development than your package, it will be a great set-up to get started. I had some gains from adding an RLV pipe and advancing the stock ingition 2-3 degrees which you may try. Also have come to the conclusion that there is so much to be had in all 3 components of the package (chassis, drive , and motor) that I can't blame lack of podium finishes on the motor exclusively. Paul Leary and a Race Kart Engineering are the 2 shops doing noticable development on the Yam when you are ready to throw money at it...good luck .
