cyl base gasket

Guys, I am doing a top on a modified honda 80. In my box of parts i have one base gasket that is noticably thicker than the other envelope which contained two gaskets... are they intended to be used together...and what would be the min squish measurement.......the gasket we took out measured about .012, used, the best i could tell..........thanks

pick the base gasket that gives you the desired squish, which is typically .022 plus or minus.

The gasket doesnt have to seal much, so you can use combinations and even cut one from a grocery bag (in a pinch).

There are also nice aftermarket gaskets (TDC???) in different thicknesses if the sight of a greasy old one offends.

If nothing else, remember to saturate the new gasket, assuming it's made out of some paper material, with oil prior to installation. That way it will be much less likely to stick and then it can be reused if desired. If not, less work for re-assembly.

There should be a desired setting for your port timing too. Changing the thickness of the cylinder base gasket will alter your port timing and that's pretty important too. Adjust your squish clearance with a different head gasket thickness or machining. It doesn't take much to alter your port timing to the point of altering your performance.
