New to karting, mainly recreational, but would eventually like to start racing, so trying to baseline.

Couple of questions for those who know about the KT's, as I am quickly learning that the curve is steep in this sport.

Currently running 4 hole Can on a Comet Carb/Engine (old lapping unit w/ out 787 markings). Still has some life. Also have a fresh comet that I am saving if I start to race. It is a WKA legal unit w/ 787 markings.

1.) Would a WKA Senior or older style "L" pipe increase HP w/o a lot of modifications? Is it bolt on or does the engine need to be built with this exhaust in mind?

2.) I am 215 LBS & 6'2". Think I have this clutch, would you recommend changing? http://www.cometkartsales.com/store/hrstman/hdc5.htm

3.) Can this clutch be "converted" from a 2 disk to a 3 disk?

4.) What size sprocket should I be running in the rear for MMX and CMP?

5.) Is there anything I need to be doing after I run the KT? ie, clean off the top of the piston? change plug, etc?

Sorry if these are duplicate questions. New to the site and sport. Thanks for the helpful responses in advance.

Best,

Curry

Curry
First and unfortunately MMX only allows the 4 hole can for the races. The new SR-Y pipe is far superior than the can. Hopefully the Yamaha guys can get them to change.

Second the L Series pipes will provide significant performance, but I would not recommend going down that road. You will need to change carb, potentially squish and for optimal performance port timing. You should also move to a wet clutch if going to a L series pipe.

My recommendation is buy a SR Y pipe WKA now runs. You can switch between a Can and SR Y pipe without changing the carb setup and port timing, Squish, clutch, yet it will give you 2 - 2 1/2 HP more.

John, great advice! I'm just lapping for fun, which I really don't have much time to do anyways, but would like to squeeze some extra HP.

I am assuming the wka pipe is new? Thus not many used parts?

Curry, I have a few kt100 pipes and header that I am trying to sell. These are the old style we use to run in yamaha pipe classes. If you are interested let me know. BTW, I live in the Charlotte,NC area.
