Does anyone have any experience with touching up/painting a chassis? I have a 10' Maranello which is quite a few substantial chips and I would like to paint over them. Any advice on the best way to approach this would be appreciated. I'm assuming powder coating would require me to strip the chassis of the original paint and get access to a furnace.

We often send ours out to get re-powder coated. Just got it back after it got pretty beat up from some off-roading in Arizona and it looks brand new.

Powdercoat is really the way to go for nice finish but you can buy touch-up paint usually for small chips.

Ohmygod that's gorgeous. What's a powdercoating cost you, TJ?

Thanks, the Exprit purple is an awesome color!

I think it's around 200 to get it stripped and re-powdered.

Strip and powdercoating should run $200 to $250. See if you can find a color that is available in auto touch-up paint, and match to the powder coating - that will make future touch-ups much easier. You will want to find a shop that is familiar with motorcycle and/or off-road chassis - a kart chassis will be a piece of cake for them.

Powder coating does require the chassis to be completely stripped as it needs to bake at over 400F to cure the paint. Use liquid Aircraft stripper first, then sandblast to finish up the details.

Powder coating small things is fairly easy, but for something like a kart frame, your going to need something bigger than an old pizza oven or kitchen oven. My guy has a commercial powdercoat oven that's big enough to do motorcycles, etc. There are ovens out that that will do much larger.

The color TJ shows in the picture above is called Dormant Violet Purple. The Dormant part refers to the fact that the first coat of powder makes it look dull gray, but when a clear coat is applied, it turns purple. So the picture shown is actually 2 coats of powder, a base and a clear.

Putting a clear coat on makes the gloss look deeper on normal base coats, and it also adds protection.

Theres a place near Detroit metro airport that chemical dips parts. They did a frame for me a few years ago for $35. They typically oil bathe it afterwords but I asked them not to because it was going straight to the powdercoater.
The local powdercoater is a sporting goods manufacturer that does it on the side. If you use one of their stock colors (basic colors such as red, black, orange, blue) they will do a frame for $65. If you want a special order color the price goes up. After powdercoating I oil coated the interior tubes of the frame.
We went with black and had our frame looking new for $100.
