Aixro racing with shifter karts (always starting at the back of the grid)

It has a lot more to do with the driver than the motor.

No surprise. Aixro should be faster anyway, but there was a driving difference there for sure. Shifters are pretty obese as karts go and especially on tighter tracks are slower than the more nimble karts of old.

Thanks for the comments on the driver Smile

I find interesting to see the performance is generally similar between the two. Actually on the day my laptimes were in the same tenth as the best KZ.

It's a mystery to me why that engine isn't more popular in the USA

2min 6sec was a close call Shocked

I've always liked these motors and would love to own one someday. Seems like a good alternative to a shifter with the rebuild times etc. Great torque as well. Wonder why they aren't more popular?

They are not as popular because when they blow up not everyone can fix them. Power is made at higher rpm's but the motor doesn't oil on decel. So after those long straightaways at 11,000 rpm's the crankshaft can only take so much

We had this discussion not too long ago too.

$5k + for an engine that you can't race in a class anywhere. No wonder no one buys these.

If it had a class that'd be another story, because it's an awesomely powerful piece.

That's kind of the catch lots of guys like them but won't buy one without a class and there won't be a class unless more guys buy them. Why did they catch on across the pond but not here?

They didn't. Faired better than here sure but not very popular.

It should be faster than KZ... What's is your package weighing in at?

Have ya seen a dyno curve for this? Not exactly what I'd call peaky!

Really long straights are an issue. (ie road racing is out), but not for the reasons you state. Its been discussed a few times how the lubrication system works in this motor and it has zero to do with lube (or lack thereof) on the overrun.
The very early models without a rev limiter crapped themselves out a times (apex seals I believe) when overrevved but that issue was resolved years ago.

I don't know they seem pretty popular in Europe. You guys can come up with all the graphs and theory's you want but if you drive one it's hard not to like it.

I don't think it is that straight forward to say one is faster than the other one, it depends on many parameters: engine, chassis, driver, set up, track layout, etc... For example on this video I went straight to the race without practice on a track I have visited once before against local guys and on tyres I was driving for the first time... So I had room for improvement.
Generally an Aixro vs a good KZ (recent and prepared) it is very similar in performance in the dry but not similar in maintenance and for me that's the beauty of the Aixro.

In wet condition, not sure if anything is faster than the Aixro - when we do race weekends in the wet our lap times comparing to all other classes are from another planet. Example in video of me doing a practice sessions with superkarts at the same track: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SylquVkSHZ4&feature=share&list=UUYuswK3WgRD9tjGt3F8Dnvw

In some cases its not all that clear, but in this case its pretty cut and dry. The Aixro should have the upper hand in most circumstances. Lighter package, similar peak power and has a broad torque band. It doesn't require you to lift of the throttle every couple of seconds to change gear. If both KZ and Aixro are running to a similar level of tune, the Aixro will be faster.

I understand now you mean: comparison without ballast. In the UK we run the Aixro at 180kg like the KZ2, some of us have to put up to 25kg ballast... Once the ballasts are removed it will be definitely a clear cut situation.
