We have had our Honda CR125 electronic paddle shift sprint kart for few years now .

See photos below:

So at this time we would like to move up to a Honda CR250.

I think we need some help with this project as we don't even know where to start.

We do have 6 inch rims and Super Kart tires on it already. It has 32 mm chassis.

Does anyone have or know of any good used affordable Honda CR250 engines ?

Or a complete ready to go used CR250 engine with everything else pipe, motor mount & etc. . It would not have to be perfect as we aren't really racing ?

I have time on this as it would be a mid summer project.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Rob Herr has made a CR250 "sprinter" I believe.
For motor-specific questions, the CR has its very own thread on the 250 forums. Its a long thread but gives a lot of good info on cylinder\year differences and soforth. http://ekartingnews.com/viewtopic.php?t=66607

Don't do it!

Unless you like going insanely fast, and getting your guts shaken out of you!

They are harder to start and brutal to drive, but when they go - OMG!

That was a modded 250, we run a stocker most of the time. Those other karts he's passing a modded 125s. That track also has enough room to really take advantage of what a 250 can do. If you're running for fun, a 250 two stroke might not be.

You'll just buy a lot of tires and spend all your time putting back all the stuff that shakes off. On a 250, different stuff falls off than a 125.

But we love it! Very Happy

Having been there and done that, if different and fast is what you are after, find a Formula C disk valve engine from TM or Vortex. Add big carb, compression, and mildly retarding ignition and voila, SUPERFUN AND FAST!

Apparently and old TM KV95 that BRC build would give Benn's modded CR250 a run.... Ben should be able to confirm or deny this, I wasn't there.

125's just have a better and more suitable power band and delivery versus the 250 singles. I have built a number of 250 single sprinters and was disappointed with all of them. You should note that when I built them I was not constrained by budget at all.....

A $1k disk valve engine with another $1k thrown at it will be awesome fun and faster!

Power and from 9000 rpm to 15000 rpm, 46-48HP, and fits the chassis really well/cleanly.

I think the consensus is that the 250 sprinter setup is a blast and a handfil to drive but not really much quicker around a typical sprint track. Take it somewhere like blackhawk though you'd be haulin the mail!

Benn sorry for getting your name wrong Very Happy

I think rising sun have a no-lift shift kit for the CR250 that is more "graceful" than an interrupt.

Riley,

Those disc valve guys talk big but they haven't actually done it!

But a GOOD reed or rotary 125 Italian motor will just keep up with our mod 250 on the tracks we run (big Sprint tracks really). They have to drive their brains out to do it. And the 250 handles traffic better.

The best way to drive a 250 kart is to baby it through the turns and let the motor do the work on the straights. If you try to work the corners like you would in a 125 it's sideways city - and slow. A 125 "dances" so much better.

If we took our kart to a genuine Sprint track we would be several seconds slow and very sore! Getting the right engine for what you want to do is key to your enjoyment.

For whats it worth I am building my 250 (Yamaha) sprint kart just for the challenge of construction and hopefully the fun of driving it-slowly at my local track. My rotax is my "serious kart".

If I am not happy with it,I just take off the rebuilt engine and sell it to a dirt bike guy who needs one as no mods have been done from stock, (except pump pulse fitting)and then look for a Honda 125 engine, exhaust/system,a mount and go that way.

Should you go ahead with the 250 project, keep your 125 radiator-for now.
You may find after only a few hours that a 250 is not for you and go back to 125 and you have saved yourself the money from the new rad.

thats my 2 cents

Guys,

We've been getting a lot of advice that our local track (Badger Raceway , Wi) is just to short at only 6/10 mile to take full advantage of a CR250 engine...So in that case we'll just stick with our stock Honda CR125..... at least for this season as shown in the above photo.

It has been a good performer and a lot fun to drive.

Thanks again for the replies and helpful advice.

If you want to try something diffrent consider a CRF 4 stroke engine. The power band is almost non existant the torque is there even at low RPMs. With the right gearing the CRF 250 will walk a CR 125 on a tight track. They're heavy and it takes some tweeking to get the kart to handle but they are a fun ride. They're cheap easy to find and durable. With all the after market stuff available for them the sky's the limit.
