Leopard starter relay

I am new to TaG racing and recently had a couple of starter issues; believe I have a bad starter relay and wondered if it is a common problem. Kart would not start, started with external starter seemed to run fine but the mychron data went heywire. Finally checked battery and etc, found it had 12 v to starter all the time (key off). I took starter apart (broken brush wire), but have not had a chance to get a starter relay yet. Would the relay cause the mychron data (rpm reading) to act crazy?
