IMHO ... A 2 stroke shifter sounds great... a KT100 not so much..

I agree, but then I own a Suzuki GT380 so I cannot be considered an unbiased person when it comes to two-strokes.

I have a theory that the noise annoyance factor has a lot to do with the frequencies and harmonics of the sound of different engines. I'd also argue that clutch karts, like CVT cars, don't sound as good because they tend to stay at a single RPM rather than changing engine sounds as they run through the gears.

At local autocrosses here in Syracuse some years back, we checked the noise level of a bunch of different cars in order to make sure we were within club limits (in order to avoid losing a particular site). Some of the most annoying cars were actually under the limit, but had a substantial high-frequency component to their exhaust noise. The loudest car on the meter was a sprint car running in A-Mod. It had a 400ci Chevy small block, but was all low frequency sound, and we were all surprised that it was over 100dB (A-weighted). Didn't sound that way to the human ear.

As a Neon owner, I feel the DLNs are irritating because of the high frequency noise they generate, oddly enough much like the Yamahas, which is one of the reasons why I run mine with muffler in place.

I doubt there's much we can do to make two-stroke noise more palatable to people who don't like it, other than trying to be as courteous as possible whenever possible.
