| From what I understand after each race day you should coat it with motor oil to prevent corrosion, may not be much help now post-rust but for the future. |

| I wouldn't. I'd just go over it with generous WD40 and a scouring pad. After that, just spray down the thing with WD40 and leave it on after you come off track and it's cooled down a little. |

It won't hurt it but rather probably burn off anyway so you will be back to where youare now.
Everybody WD40's thier pipe because it's quick easy and works well. _________________ Arrow AX-8/ Rotax Sr. |

I don't see a problem. I've actually done the entire pipe after giving it a good sanding. I don't recall the grit of sand paper I used but it was strong enough to remove the old paint but not too strong to cause any scratches. Then I put about 3-4 coats of hi-temp (1200 degree thermo-guard protection) BBQ paint.
I don't see why that would be a problem but I am open to correction! |

I scuffed mine and painted it with BBQ paint and it looks factory, and holds up very well... |

If your club or series utilizes Rotax Max rules, you may want to ask them directly as the following comes from the rule book:
20.1
Must be as supplied by BRP-POWERTRAIN and cannot be modified except for the replacement of the silencer absorption material and the use of threaded fasteners in place of the rivets for securing the silencer end cap.
Painting the pipe could be interpreted as a modification. |

| I painted my tag pipe and a fellow racer told me it was illegal. Any modifications to the pipe is illegal, so like Peter said, better be safe and ask your local series. I know Rotax is even more controlled that Tag, and like I said, it is illegal in my series. I guess people started coating them with ceramic to control exhaust temps. That's what I was told anyway. |

It's a fair point because we've been DQ'd for not having the o-ring seal in our carburator cap! (Didn't even know there was a seal). They put it down as a "modification" or something like that. But we did check this painting issue with our local series (club and national) and they had no problems with it. So do check - better to be safe than sorry. |

| It may sound silly, but if you were able to cut your pipe, make mods to it and weld it back together, if painted, its hard to tell its been tampered with. Some of these rules seem out of hand, but rules creep is a slippery slope that the Rotax world has been very keen to avoid (almost). A quick mention to your local Rotax club would clear all this up ahead of time. Some are ok with it, others, not so much. |

Page 6 of the international rules states: | Quote: | | The use of thermal barrier coatings/ceramic coatings on or in the engine and on or in the exhaust system is prohibited. |
I've always assumed any paint would fall under this category, which would make it illegal. _________________ Aluminos |

Well Carlos
Using your train of thought putting WD40 on it is illegal also as it leaves a residue IE "coating" also.
Here a inspector takes a pen knife scratches the paint if there's metal just under neath no problem ! but if he need to get the disc sander out !!! PROBLEM!!!

And, plus, that's just like, my opinion, man. _________________ Aluminos |
