So, didn't fix after all. Same sound at times and then it wouldn't start at all - making sounds that were horrible. Ends up the flywheel nut had backed off a bit and the flywheel was "loose". Took off, cleaned threads, bought new nut and then re-tightened with locktite. Works like a charm now. Engine guy knew exactly what was wrong when he heard it up close.
