Note... we race Yamaha Jr. Can, so I inherited this Yamaha Pipe to baby sit while it's owner go's over seas to protect the good old USA. I was told I could drive it if I want. Another person tells me be real careful not to stick it. He says unlike the can where you set the needles and leave it alone (so to speak) on the pipe you haft to fatten it up (open it up) to let more gas in going down the straights and close it back up some in the corners to get the power. And this is a never ending process during a race. If I forget to fatten it back up on the straights I will stick it. Is this something I better stay away from? Or do I just open it up to 2 3/4 and leave it? That is where it was set when I got it. My boy wants to move up to Yamaha can sr or go to pipe next year. What is the better move. He is getting used to adjusting his Yamaha Jr. carb ok. _________________ St. louis Mo. |

Kent,
I ran pipe before, I never had to adjust carb around the whole track..may lean down to get out of pits and open back up on track.. that was on a Adkins and LAD engine...Who built the engine? May want to give them a call to make sure...Make sure the carb is setup for pipe too, carbs are different for pipe...
Where does Bryan plan on running pipe next year?
How were the races sunday? _________________ Miles Racing

WAZ UP JT.....
It's a SRI Motor (John Simonin) If I spelled it right? Sorry John. The kart was run in the ground so I am giving it a once over so I'm guessing it was set for pipe. Nothing looks like its been changed or touched in some time.
I don't know on the pipe racing thing right now. just something we are tossing around. he wants me to put a can on it so we can run together. I like the idea but double the spending cost on everything to race. Right now the pipe is a learning curve for us.
Were good ...nice and quiet I think I got my point across really well.

Be fun for you two to run against each other... Pipe is fun to run for sure...what kind of pipe is with it?
We came over before to scale remeber, but we are getting things ready for KKN... trying some new tires out as well...
Did you ever sell the clone kart you had? _________________ Miles Racing

That's right. I don't know on the pipe. No on the clone kart. I sold some parts off it but still have the frame and body. Thinking of keeping the rear end as a back up for Bryan.
Know anyone that wants a frame and body CHEAP like DIRT CHEAP? _________________ St. louis Mo. |

You start with the setting that gives you best power and open the needles throughout the race to control heat. Rev the engine and kill it quick at the scales and it will be easier to start.

Go pipe - faster and more fun!
There's really no need to be adjusting all the time and if you're a little conservative, you'll get "good enough" performance and you'll be reliable.
The low speed is probably the harder thing to "dial in" initially - to totally dumb it down, if in doubt, richen first and if things still don't feel responsive, lean it. With the KT, you'll probably end up opening the low speed up a bit as the race progresses. As Walt says, you need to control the heat and the KT does a pretty lousy job of cooling itself.
The high speed is pretty simple. Get on a straight, foot to the floor, and open the high until it just starts to lose the "crisp" sound and feel - where it's just starting to "4-cycle". Then lean it just enough to get the "crisp" sound and feel back. You could probably lean it a bit more to get a bit more performance, but unless you're a top driver, it's a negligible enough performance loss that the comfort knowing you won't stick it should keep a smile on your face. |

| Shouldn't stick it if you keep the head temperature I'd say below 450, EGT is the way to go on tuning a pipe though. Do you have any idea how many hours are on the motor since it's had a new piston/ring? I try not to go over 5-6 races without doing a piston/ring in my pipe. I've stuck my fair share of them but if I follow these rules I usually don't have a bad time. |

we always raced pipe with a trigger control on the high adjuster, and pulling on it would lean it down the straight and than when your ready to brake you let off. That in my opinion was always good for a 1 to 2 tenths each lap and a 200 more rpms down the straight. Not hard to setup but takes a little practice.
