|
|
I bought a kart with a used Leopard on it and the starter would spin but not engage. I took the bendix cover off and found a spring between the cover and the bendix. According to this diagram there shouldn't be anything between the bendix and cover.
After reading this thread on why the bendix in the Leopard sucks
I'm thinking someone put the spring in there to ensure that the starter absolutely NEVER engaged.
Isn't the same bendix used in other kart engines? I've read quite a few threads where people talk about running a Leopard with an operational starter for many seasons, so how are they able to escape the engagement of catastrophic failure? Is it safe to get a new bendix and leave the spring out so I can enjoy the convenience of the green button? |

Yeah, it was probably put there to disable it, like you said. For whatever reason, the bendix is extremely unreliable on the Leopard. Some people leave them in as designed, but save them for starting only if they go off track and use an external starter otherwise. We still use ours, but we change it frequently. _________________ High Quality American Made kart stands. Available direct to you or through one of our many dealers.

The $0.02 spring inside the bandix went on mine once. The bandix contacted the starter gear at around 16,000 rpm. Took out the starter gear and clutch . Thank god the crank halves were still true. Hell of a lockup at ~80mph _________________ CKR/KZ

I've had it happen twice going into the interstate turn @ NCMP. Sheared the crank both times.
I think most of the guys @ NCMP have pulled theirs or removed the starter gear ring.
As far as the starter in a general sense...
