I'm purchasing a rotax engine ('07 with updated cylinder, air box, clutch, sealed, etc) and actively looking for a chassis to start my karting career. I was wondering if there are any tips I should know before firing it up and taking it out the first time? Is there anything that show what the operating temps should be at before pushing it? Max safe RPMs? Anything including the most basic knowledge is pretty much what I'm looking for, it'd be a shame to take it out and grenade it first time out Thanks guys. |

Hi Matt,
Hopefully you can connect up with another Rotax owner at your local track for some advice on gearing and the basics. The nice thing about the Rotax is it has a rev limiter that will prevent you from grenading it due to over-revving. Depending on track configuration, you'll probably target 13,500-13,700 max RPMs without a draft.
You'll want to check out the following:
water level
jetting (consider jetting software or find another Rotax owner for local advice)
mix your fuel and oil
check gear oil level
Optimal temps for the Rotax are 140-155 F ... get it up around 110 before pushing it.
That should get you going at the track. You'll want to get comfortable with regular Rotax maintenance (power valve cleaning, clutch cleaning, etc.). There are a number of posts that go over these things and a great Wrench to Win video that will give you the basics too.
Good luck and start reading the Rotax forum - there's a ton of good info in there.

| Clean The Carb frequently. Check for bad floats keep a few spare ones they tend to crack and fill up with fuel. 145-160 water temp the engine will be good tape up the radiator or change plugs to get it hotter. Denso IW27 is the plug we used the most. There is a pretty basic jetting chart in the rotax manual if your new you will not have to be spot on the engine is pretty forgiving. |
