Hi Craig,

If you can supply a little more information, like what/where you are planning on racing, there may be more people out there who can help.

As others have said, www.4cycle.com is a very good place for these types of questions. I don't like sending people away, but getting answers for you is more important.

Good luck!

Glenn

Craig, you have asked a very complex question and does not have a simple answer. The pipe length max is somewhat dictated by your chassis layout. Also are you tuning for bottom or top end? RLV, Robertson comes to mind. My approach when I started 4 cycling was to invest in some books on motor building. A good place to start is Jimmy Glens “Building a Briggs”. It sells for about $20 on 4 cycle.com. Well written and goes into the relationships of cam, timing overlap, and pipe size, length.
As I tell everyone in earshot, you need to find a kart shop/ engine builder you like/trust. This is one of the most important relationships in karting. Just try to remember they are in business to make a living so unlimited phone calls and no purchase will soon make an enemy.
I am sure there are a ton of good people in your area; just work at finding the one’s you can work with.

Have fun Racing
