Alcohol makes more horsepower than gasoline but I don't really know the origins or why it came to be other then it probably wasn't a rule on fuel and the fast guys started running alcohol and others switched and before to long everyone was running alcohol and there was no reason to change it. That's just my opinion!

one the reasons I have heard often is that methanol is easier to Tech (ie check for illegal additives) track side than gasoline.

Actuly quite a few reasons, teah is a big one most tracks simply use a pump around, only take about a minute on the way to the grid. At Nat. event they usually use the water test, equil parts alky and water mixed in a test tube, any additives will cloud the water, fast and simple, other reasons, runs cooler, this is a factor mostly in Enduros up here, but think the southern boys might also have a temp problem down south on gas, safer in pits, less chance of fire, cost, cheeper than racing gas, sometimes even pump gas, big one to me, it keeps the inside of motors cleaner, much less carbon build up, on gas if your clearances are tight (pop up or cyl head) you can build up enough carbon in a hard practice day to get bounced in tech if you don't take it apart and clean things, and also as stated, it does make us faster.
