This was probably covered before but will a 94 6 speed fit in 97-99 cases? I did read the post about the main shaft being shorter in earlier years and causing problems.

Thanks Allan. That is some great information. So as I understand it a 90-97 6 speed should work. My only concern is the problem that Juan had with his transmission. The main shaft was too short and that caused it to lock up. He fixed it by getting the later year main shaft. Just don't want to go through the same problems. http://www.ekartingnews.com/viewtopic.php?t=106772&highlight=transmission

Dude, re-read the gearbox info in this site I wrote. There is a wide transmission and narrow, wide case and narrow, you can put a narrow trans in a wide case if you a) shim it, or b) replace the mainshaft. Measure what you have and decide what you need...

Thanks Chris. I did go back a read all the post and now I fully understand what is going on. I guess I know what Santa is going to put in my stocking. What I'm doing is trying to put together an engine for a friend that wants to get into shifters. I'm running a 97 modified engine and I'm going to take the transmission out of that and build a stock moto for me, since that seems to be the way to go. I also have the 97 ignition, stock cylinder and head and I'm going to put together a stock 97 engine for him to play with. I'm getting a 94 transmission to put in it. So now I will be able to do that without any fear of all the problems you guys went through. Thanks so much.

ok, I have a similar question....92 trans in a 2001 case...I assume I either need to shim it or get a different main shaft? or will the 92 drop right in?

Okay, I understand "Measure twice and shim once" but where do you shim and what do you use to shim with?

Do not shim, just get the longer shaft. _________________ http://www.goherbalife.com/roanoke

That's what I plan to do. I'm just curious about the shimming. Just trying to understand. Do you shim because the later cases are wider causing the main shaft to be in the wrong position?

Maybe a better way to describe it is that the later cases are wider so they have enough room inside to allow the shaft to move where it shouldn't be.

Juan,
I'm just making sure that the '97 shaft worked with all of your other '94 parts. If I understand correctly, I just get the '97 shaft and put all the '94 washers, gears, etc. on it and I should be good to go. I don't have to do anything to the counter shaft or the cases. Is that correct? No way to save $80.00 by just shimming what I have?
Thanks,
Todd |
