I love the open class! I hope this does what Roger hopes and gets some people to build some cool stuff and show up. There are enough options that it shouldn't cost a ton of money.
I am working on scraping the time and money together to run this class. I have my engine picked out.

I'd like to run it, even if it's with something relatively tame. Wallet has final say on that. I think even if 6 karts turn up from UAS and we get another 8 "regulars" it would be a great spectacle.
For anyone planning on doing this, its important to note that the UAS rules welcome regular CIK-type chassis and bodywork, so really nothing is being taken out of the class, just more options added with associated weights to balance things a little. Motor options include, but are not limited to...
Wankels\rotaries: eg Aixro. Single rotor, max disp 295cc.
Flathead Four strokes: Up to 500cc, multiple cylinders permitted
Rotary, reed and PP 2 strokes: Multi cylinders up to 217cc total. Single cylinder 218-250.
OHC four strokes: Max 305cc if multiple cylinder, single cylinder max 306-510.
Turbo=OK
Superhcarger=OK
Shifters=OK

Let's speculate on what the hot setup will be.
100cc reed/rotary at 330 lbs?
150cc reed at 380 lbs?
Yamaha YZF/WR/YFZ450 at 430 lbs?
Aixro at 430 lbs?
I'm leaning towards the BRC150 working really well here. 430 lbs is a lot, and at some point you can't get really sticky tires to hold up with a lot of power on a fast course... _________________ "If you're still in full control, you're not going fast enough" - Fred Frame |

There have been discussions about this among many. While Rock Island is a horsepower track, the more powerful engines running at heavier weights are going to have to brake earlier giving lighter packages the advantage in and out of corners.
4 cycles vs. 2 cycles? Who knows? That's the fun of it all. We tried in previous efforts to pit 2-cycle engine builders against each other, but it seems for the most part in this day and time (with a couple of exceptions - thanks guys) they are more than happy to build if someone is paying for it.
Throwing 4-cycle builders, even wankels in the mix changes the dynamics. We have even had some interest from vintage karts with dual motors who say they will put on soft tires and give it a run. Heck I would love to see what some of the factories can come up with off their benches!
Are the rules fair? Best we could come up with. I guess we'll see. They work for UAS. Besides, as the release noted, if you're racing to nit-pick, this isn't the class for that. Race it to be bold and have fun.
So I'm excited. The rules will let anyone play. And as Jim noted, if we can get some Muscle Karts to come out and show us how they do it, all the more fun! We are working on that --it's a great opportunity to showcase their program 2 weeks before their Grand Nationals in Missouri.
Hopefully we can have one event a year where people go back to the roots of karting and tinker with their karts and engines to see what they can come up with. The sport needs that. We also appreciate the help from Mark Bergfelt of UAS to help us get to this point. |

I dont think people are too worried about it being fair at this point. I think a lot drivers would just like to hit the streets in some crazy-ass machinery. I think its going to be a spectacle for those watching. For sure it'll have a distinctive sound and even smell.
Charles its important to note you can run TWIN 100cc (or 113) motors if you wish, with the extra weight of course.
With so many options for people to play around and have fun I think this will be a success. I really hope people come out of the woodwork for this one. Heres a few combos I thought of..
Bored and stroked DD2
Dual supercharged clones (how hilarious would that be?)
Single cylinder 250 superkart
C-open from olden days
B-Stock laydown
ICA\FA on alky
TaG or KF bored out or on alky.
Twin 100cc
250Superkart (single cylinder)
450 4 Stroke superkart
Supercharged or turbo'd CRF250 shifter
125shifter running alky (lots of old modded CR's out there!)
BRC150
Some sort of Honda GX or Briggs V-Twin torque monster..
I think the winners are going to be the people in the stands! _________________ CES Grattan pre-entry is open. TaG, Shifter, KPV, KT100, Animal\LO206, enduro or superkart.

I put a CRF 250 on a Top Kart shifter chassis for not a lot of $. What about a moded CRF 450? They're similiar in size and weight around 55 HP stock and could probably be brought up tp 75 with the right modes.
It's to bad they didn't allow a little more on the duals like 125cc. That would have opened the door to so many options like twin PRD Parilla or Rotax.
I never planned on traveling for this sport but this might be to good to pass up.

| I think the BRC150 is the best package, on paper. We'll see when race time comes though... |

RIGP is a wild race. The open class last year was just as watched as the King of Streets main event. Just hearing some of those monster motors was worth it. _________________ CKR/KZ

Yeah I'm not sure why they didn't allow dual 125s??

I'm not sure why we didn't allow jet engines either. They will have some awesome ones in town the weekend before for the World Series of Drag Racing.
There must be a point of diminishing returns with regards to the tires actually getting traction .... and being able to slow down for the corners.... and not have 500 lb. weights. This is, after all, a KART RACE.
I believe the rules open things up to just about anything that makes sense. The ONLY thing that is regulated is max. displacement and weight. That still offers a wide range of things you can do to have fun and go faster. Bring 'em on guys.

Well what does a Rotax weigh? I'm guessing under 30 lbs PRD is less. So compare that to some ICC shifters I know Pavesi is around 57 lbs. Then consider the the engines weight is on both sides of the kart. The PRD engine kits are running around $1500. So for $3000 you could build a 50+ HP TAG kart that should be pretty well balanced and a real screamer.

I think aside from the actual cc limit the reason for a lack of TaG motor love is the availability of bitchin twin 100-113cc FA/ICA motors for half the cost of a single PRD. There just isnt much reason to run twin TaGs with all the other options about. I think twin TaG are there you are reaching a point of diminishing returns.
TaG motors can still play too, just not twins. Some bore them (or bore and stroke them) and run them on alky. I think thats teh route I'll be going...... alkoholic Sonik. It'll put down the 50HP of a dual PRD for half the money and get to run less weight. Should be a riiiiide _________________ CES Grattan pre-entry is open. | We have decided NOT to allow gearbox karts in Pro Open at Rock Island. Only exception is DD2 with gearbox in top gear, shifter disengaged. |

I'm curious why? I think at this point throw everything at it and see who turns up.. _________________ CES Grattan pre-entry is open. TaG, Shifter, KPV, KT100, Animal\LO206, enduro or superkart.
