Guys,

Just found out the MMX is going to require and airbox on all shifter karts. I don't have an airbox for my CR125, just a K&N filter. What's a good performing airbox for this engine? Also, I am not familiar with airboxes in general. Do they contain air filters?

The never ending stream of cash outflow continues!

Thanks,

Todd

We just ran airboxes at Laguna Seca. You will have two choices - the Righetti black airbox with four funnels (usually 22mmID), or the Freeline blue airbox with four funnels (29mmID). From what I saw, the Righetti was more common. I think you could fit a Uni foam filter in the box, but it would have to conform a bit around the tubes. You will use the angle boot.

You will also have to re-think your seat strut configuration - the airbox will create a large obstacle between the side of the seat and the bearing bracket. Make sure to budget enough time to get this done - not a "night before the race" project.

The Freeline 2 hole blue airbox is your best option. Some teams run it even when filters are allowed. Evidently the box allows for the best air flow into the carb.
Extreme karting sells this model on their website.

Jim,

I just ordered a couple of these for my two karts. Do you put an air filter inside the box or just the screens in the box serve as the filter? If the filter is "optional", what do guys typically run. Trying to get all of this stuff here and installed in the next two weeks as the first race is the middle of March.

Thanks,

Todd

I never ran a filter inside the box. I would think stuffing the box would affect performance due to restricting/altering the airflow. The straight airflow is what makes the blue box work.

You can run a filter inside the box to get some protection again debris ingestion, but it will cost you some power. I've never run a filter inside or the screens outside. Too restrictive. With that, I only run the airbox when required. The K&N standard filter provides way more protection and supposedly better horsepower.

Oh, and you may find that going with the airbox usually results in 2 steps smaller on the main jet. Try your normal jetting first and adjust if needed.
