I have been using the Horstman two disc clutch for three seasons now and can't say I've been pleased with the results. I am looking at changing clutches for the upcoming season.
Research shows that Tomar, L&T, and Patriot are the popular choices. Any advice/suggestions would be greatly appreciated. |

| I had good results with both the L&T and the Tomar. Tomar lasted longer between changing plates. I think I had a single disk L&T and a 2 disk Tomar. |

| Tomar has come out with a new line of friction disc and heat treats. The friction and clamping force has completely changed. Stall speed stays balanced and remains consistent all day. They launched these new products at the PRI and IMIS show after extensive 2012 testing. |

This was our biggest complaint with the Horstman. Never could get a consistant stall speed. Will definitely look into the Tomar. Thanks guys |

| I use both the 2 and 3 disc tomara and really never have to touch them. Once you get stall speed set, it stays. I couldn't be happier with the performance. |

We ran Horstman several years ago and I keep one around to use as a doorstop.
We've used the Tomar for the past few years and am completely satisfied with it. Easy to set, a snap to rebuild and to quote Ron Popeil, "Set it and forget it"
Try the Tomar, you won't regret it.
I look forward to trying their new discs.

| Patriot I believe uses horstman parts. As I stated in my earlier post you can't go wrong with the tomar |

The Patriot and the Horstman have a few parts in common or interchangeable (drum, disks, spring) but all parts on the Patriot are made by Patriot. Also with the Patriot being a 6 spring clutch the spring plate, floaters and inner hub are not the same. |

Mark, will my Horstman Steel Nytro disks work in the Patriot?
I've had allot of gear breakage with the Tomar, I sold mine.
Thanks,

Personally I wouldn't recommend putting wet clutch disks in a dry clutch, that probably wouldn't end well!

Thats interesting, I've seen piles of broken Horstman gears (drivers) but never seen a Tomar break. I assume you're referring to drivers rather than sprockets. Hmmm?

The driver was fine he never puts his hands near the chain. The 10th sprockets broke off the drum. Sent a bunch back to Tomar and they replaced them. They all broke too but saved the last good one to sell the clutch with.
Problem was they made a bushing thick enough so you could press it in with no subsequent machining. This left the steel holding the sprocket on very thin. Our track is very hard on clutches and they snapped like twigs.
Maybe they've improved the design since then IDK.
