Tyler Palmer drove to a second place finish in HPV 1 in his very first race when he was 8 years old in 2002 at Amago Raceway in San Diego. The track is still there in the ground but hasn't seen action in years.  |

Paved: Whiteland Raceway.1979. Burton Magnum/Mc91B1. America's oldest (1958) operating kart track.
Dirt: Mountain Raceway,Stinesville,IN.1980. Bug Black Widow/K55. Track was owned/operated by the Kinser family. 1/8 mile high banked clay.

Moran Raceway - March, 2004 in a rental kart (100cc HPV Top Kart) with Rocky Sr. looking over my shoulder. I spun 3 times in 3 sessions and I remember the rush I felt from driving that kart for the first time was simply incredible.
Moran Raceway was and still is the best kart track I've ever driven/raced on.
I don't know how you could ever top turns 1 and 2 at Moran.

Blue Island's Raceway Park (Chicago).
All I remember is that there was a good size field of karts, and we ran some sort of briggs. I came with a guy who had 2 karts, and me and another guy who had a lot more experience drove them. They must have been, we'll say, not legal. Cause every race we ran, we started in the back, and went straight to the front, finishing 1-2 each time.... Me being the 2.
No way, with my experience level should I have been able to that. But, somehow there was either no tech, or we just weren't caught? I still have that 2nd place trophy somehwere.
First laydown was at Oak Hill road course in Texas. Won't ever forget that first attempt at coming down "Chicken Hill" and not lifting.... I think I am still holding my breath!!

Similar story for me.
1985, just turned 8. Westwood (Coquitlam, BC) kart track (long gone). Used Margay with a flathead Briggs.
Jumped straight into qualifying. Warm-up lap was alright, then on the timed lap I went way too deep into Turn 2 and launched into a tree. Bent the frame into a "V" shape. Also scared myself into my first "retirement" from karting. |

Marlboro Speedway in MD about 1960. I was only 15 so I had to run my freinds kart. My homemade chasis had an Power Products AH 81 on it. I was not old enought to run the motor so I ran his Clinton A 49 (?)
The Compitition Kart club had a 1/2 kart track inside the stock car track, which inclueded useing parts of the oval. Running with WKC now  |

Second kart 1969, Homelite chassis & engine, later a flathead

1st track was Don's raceway in Wichita Kansas. It was 1972 and I was 10 years old. Think it was a wasp with a mac 91. Dad made me practice for almost a year before he let me race, and I think I took 3rd in my 1st race. My dad, Bob Berry, was the flagger which was cool! The track is long gone and the area is now suburbia.

Also at the (now defunct) Monrovia Raceway, in a TopKart KT-100 direct drive, with much useful advice from one Paul Montopoli, Rob Morris, and lots of great folks at Englishtown and Nicholson.
I'm in the process of selling my whole setup, and getting melancholic about it.
Hey Paul, remember the (also defunct) Milford Grand Prix? Most fun I've ever had on a kart!
