So i've picked up a late 90s Vortex ICA (air-cooled) as something to play around with during the winter (sprint track). It didn't come with a pipe, and I honestly have no idea what to look for. I've seen the term 'vevey' tossed around a bit, but my google-fu doesn't turn up much with that search. Not much on ebay either. From what I can tell, pipes for the Leopard look similar, but i'm not sure if they'll work.
So what should I be looking for? Even better, where should i be looking for one? Doesn't have to be anything special, just has to work for a 100cc DD Sprint application. Better still, does anyone out there have one they're willing to part with for cheap?!  _________________ GP10/CR125

The likes of a TaG pipe would be OK. Ideally something from a ROK or a Sonik. I tried a Sonik TX125 pipe with my Vortex FA rotary and it worked well.
Does your motor have the plastic cowling around the barrel? _________________ Live in the midwest and have a TaG, Shifter, KPV, KT100, Animal\LO206, enduro or superkart?

One of the proper pipes for your engine is the RLV S1 pipe.
Online shops like TS Racing and Russell Karting can source these, as can any kart shop that handles RLV parts. |

I've always wondered how the like of the S1 and the Q98 etc compare to what was usually run/homologated with these motors. To me the are really weird looking! Faster? _________________ Live in the midwest and have a TaG, Shifter, KPV, KT100, Animal\LO206, enduro or superkart?

These types of pipes are designed for clutch applications. They have nothing below 9k or so and are very peaky in comparison to a DD pipe. For a direct drive application you need something designed for DD with a long flat power curve. Although the leopard pipe would probably get the job done for playing around. |

Back in the early to mid-90's, in the Pacific Northwest, Italian Motors were really the first shop to start moving towards direct drive / Vevey from the clutch / S1 setup on the reed motors of the day (Parilla TT-75).
When people switched to direct drive, they didn't go back.
That should tell you what's faster (never mind more simple, more fun, etc.)! |

That's a VL-98. If you are a lighter driver you'll be giving some shifters a hard time. A lot of pipes will work with that. You could even use a JICA pipe if you had to. But I would go with a TaG pipe from one of the higher revving motors like a Sonik TX125 or a Vortex RokTT. Although they run with a clutch as far as the pipe is concerned they are direct drive.

After racing for years with clutches, I went up to Vegas for Eur-Am Challenge back in 1985. The best 135cc sprint racers from the world were there to race. Most American hot dogs were running their high ported K-30 Komets with axle clutches. Of course, the Europeans brought their direct drive K-30 and the Cali Kart chassis and whipped us soundly.
Morbidelli won with Mike Wilson second. The top three Americans were Todd Spaude, Ronnie Emmick and Scott Preutt. They finished 9,10 and 11 in the A main.
Went back home and decided to run my TKM 135 as a direct drive. Not having the correct pipe, it was like wrestling a bear trying to hang onto the thing. It came off the corner like a stock Briggs and then suddenly felt like a Mac truck hit you in the rear end. It made for a very exciting ride and even lost a few pounds and built up some upper body strength.
I would love to try it again with the right engine and pipe combination.
I guess the moral of the story is to have the engine ported for direct drive and get the correct pipe. Life will be much kinder if you do.  _________________ Began kart racing 1959. Made many friends along the way. |

Cool story Mike. I would have expected clutch to be faster, so that's interesting. Here's hoping for a return to simpler karts going forward!
