Funny you mention that Jim, I was thinking the same thing last night, why worry about self charging a battery that I keep a float charge a few days prior to a race, besides we use a external starter all the time and pray that the onboard works when needed.

My guess .05 hp. assuming it's got a 3 amp charger.. dont know if it does.

1 hp equals 746 watts so 3 amps times 12 volts divided by 746 would be about .05 hp.

That extra power shows up as a TUR-BOW-BOOST on a Rotax. Rotax guys are all sandbagging to keep the weight off... True story!

Rusty, with the Rotax, they're taking the power generated by the coil and feeding it to the starter and then engaging the starter to help the Rotax motor put out more power. A sly trick by the Austrians. our secret

Gotcha, that explains why bendix lasts so much longer than on the Leopard. Learn something new every day, now if you will excuse me I need to swap out my power band, and lube the muffler bearings. Laughing

I think you might only see a gain when the battery is charging. I'm just comparing it to a belt driven alternator. When the battery is charged and with nothing else drawing power the alternator isn't consuming as much HP as it is when it's putting out. So you might get near the same gain simply by making sure the battery is fully charged.
