|
|
My 15 year old is wanting to get into racing. "box stock is popular at one of our local tracks. (Fort Meyers FL Race Complex) 4 stroke is new to me so maybe you guys can clear some things up.
Is box stock a Honda GX 200 stock engine?
Is a clone a chinese copy of a GX 200?
Why use the clone instead of a Honda?
What modifications are allowed in box stock?
Thanks

Hi Brian,
Looking at the track website, they follow WKA rules for Box Stock. If you can get your hands on a tech manual, you will see the exact rules for Box Stock. Yes, it is the 'Clone' engines, or the china copy of the GX 200. It's a great way to get yourself into the sport if you haven't been part of it before. The other tip is to find a local kart shop to set you in the right direction. I'm not familiar with the kart shops in the area. _________________ David Cole

Thanks David I'll find those rules. I've talked with some shops and they're telling me to set up a clone and make it competive around $700 so not a lot of money for a kart engine. What I'm not understanding is why everyone is starting with a Chinese copy and not a real Honda? The stock Honda is around $350 the stock clone around $200 so not a big diffrence in cost. I wonder if the aftermarket parts to make it competive are made for the clone and not the Honda?

5 years ago the intent with the clone was to buy one at Harbor Freight for $149.00, spend $75.00 on basic needed upgrades and go racing on the cheap.
Racers being racers and all, it now takes a new $600-$700 motor to compete at the front. You are entering the sport after the clone engine has evolved into what it is. Kart shops started blueprinting them which added cost and horsepower.
Your logic as to why they are pricier than they need to be is correct. We are so far into the game now that there is no going back.
Heres my advice:
Go buy the nicest newest most blueprinted legal clone motor that you can. Bolt it to the kart and let your kid learn to drive. When one clone kart goes faster down the straight than another one, its because of kart setup and corner speed.
Clone racing is all about momentum which makes it very fun. |

Well I set up my 12 year old with a clone. We did all the leagal modifications and ran the engine in with straight 30 wt oil for around 30 minutes. We then switched to synthetic. In the begining we started with 18/65 gearing and the kart felt sluggish and would only hit 5800 RPM on the straight. So I switched to 16/68 and it felt better and hit around 6000 RPM on the strtaight. After putting around 2 hours on it we saw more power so now we are at 16/65 and hitting 6300 RPM on the straight. now with almost 5 hours on it I also notice that compression has increased it's harder to pull start. Is this kind of break in normall on a clone? I feel like at this point we can probably go back to 18/65 gearing and see what we get?
My kids having a blast and getting very good it. His times are normally equal to or better than other clones on the track and we haven't tweeked the chassis yet or completly sorted out the jetting.
I have to say for the money involved and the simplicity this Box Stock is a great starting point. It's hard to beat the bang for the buck.

Look at a ratio chart and you will see that one tooth on the engine equals very near 4 teeth on the axle. It changes a little the higher and the lower the ratio.
Send for my free Excel spreadsheet. There is a lot of good ratio information and a bunch of other stuff.

Dear kartpartsdepot.com
I don't know how often it's updated but here is the advertisers list for this site and you aren't listed.
http://ekartingnews.com/news_info.php?n=20939
Rob Howden asked me not to solicit business on the forum unless I was paying for advertisements and I think that's totally fair. I don't know if you're a paid advertiser or not but there is a classified section here:
http://ekartingnews.com/viewforum.php?f=37
In my book advertisers should be working hard to answer questions on the forum about their products but just dredging up a bunch of old threads and saying "come to my website" is pure SPAM.
If you have something to add to the conversation please do so but just putting links to your products in a whole bunch of threads wastes my time.

I don't know that's a neat little colection of how to information and you don't have to buy anything to view it. I wouldn't call that a comercial solicitation just because it's on his sight.

If he only posted it once maybe....
But he stuck it in a whole bunch of posts and also suggested people go to his site to buy stuff.
If you check his profile you'll see that even though he's been a member since 2007 he only now just started posting and all his posts are solicitations for business. In my book that's spam.
A few years back I participated in a thread where I offered to sell somebody something and Rob Howden asked me not to do it unless I was paying for advertising space. I've had the good fortune to meet Rob a few times and really believe in what he does with the site and the sport in general.
So, I sent Mr. Pine a PM and called his posts spam. I've been exchanging information and ideas on the Internet since 1995 and I'm pretty protective of the places I contribute to. Hopefully 2013 is the year I can start advertising kart stuff again and you can bet my advertising dollars will go to EKN first.

I'm not following it so I guess your right. My point was that there is a diffrence between go to my sight and buy this and go to my site for how to articles. But yes it can be taken to far. I do like what he put together there it's very informative and to the point.
