We just purchased a Trackmagic Demon that my son will race next season. We are currently changing things around to suit his driving style and comfort. The problem that we are having is one of leg room (he's 6'). His knees are bent up to the point where he is contacting the shift lever and steering wheel.
We used to race a 4-cycle kart that had bolt-on adjustable seat mounting brackets - the Trackmagic does not (welded on). I measured the back of the seat bottom to the pedals and there is about a 4" difference between the two karts. The seat top is about 2" forward from the axle in the Trackmagic, and just about even in the 4-cycle kart. I am looking for some suggestions about getting more leg room short of cutting off the porch and welding on an extension, I was under the impression that the long porch was only needed if you were 6'2" or over anyway.
Perhaps some different seat mounting method or even a different seat that would allow us to move it backward a couple of inches? The bottom front mounting bolts are very close to the front edge of the seat (It's a fully padded Tillet), so I can't simply drill more holes. Any suggestions? |

Wayne, Look here for information on extended porches. I think this will help you.

I am 6' and had similar problems with my CRG (125). I moved the seat back a full one inch from what was recommended (improved the handling) and also removed the heal stops and adjusted the pedals so that my heels use the front chassis tube for a "stop". These two adjustments got me a full 2" without altering the chassis.
I've also sampled a Trackmagic and was please with the amount of leg-room so you should be able to get him to fit! Trackmagic should have a range of seat position measurements for you. |

| Cut off the porch and weld on extesions, you will not regret it, and you driver will be more comfy...and you'll have more options for adjusting the seat. |

DO NOT just cut the frame and lengthen it. Your chassis will not work like it has been designed to. You should be able to buy a longer steering shaft or might be able to get there by just adjusting the pedals all the way out. 6' isn't that tall and should not be much of a problem but do yourself a favor and don't cut the frame. Good luck.

Adding an extended porch is easily done. Just find a local race prep shop, cut off the current porch and add one to your liking. I have a driver who is also tall well over 6ft 4in and all legs.
I have done the modification to a host of different manufacturers chassis and we had no handling issues. In fact in many cases it improved my ability to get the weight where I wanted the weight as the driver was not all crammed up.
Any good shop will have a certified welder to do the job. |
