has anyone got experience tuning Tony rear brakes?
different brake disc, pads etc/? got a "new" tony and struggle to get any feel for the brakes, the feel is hard, numb and heavy - frankly, incomparable to Birel brakes. any suggestions how to get more feel into the brake system? Thank you for commenting!

Jean,
I'm assuming you have a Tony Kart that is 2006 or newer. Before changing anything, ensure you're using the original OTK brake pads. Also, if you're using pads that are old, or wearing down, pull them out and rough them on a belt sander a bit, over time the pad can develop a "glaze" that can be taken off with an abrasive.
Other options you have if you find yourself further in need of braking performance would be the optional sintered brake pads available from OTK, or the larger brake disc kit. If you would like to try an aftermarket pad, we have these available as well.
It may also be time to rebuild the system to ensure the seals are in good condition and no cross contamination of fluid has occurred within the system. Check to see that the system has the proper (DOT 5) brake fluid. If you are in need of a rebuild, we have all the necessary parts available, and a step by step guide will be posted soon.
If your brake system is in good condition, and you would just like to alter the feel of the brakes, try moving the brake rod to one of the 2 holes to change the pedal's leverage.

Also, I noticed you're in LA, if you need any help feel free to stop by the shop any time and I would be happy to assist you. _________________ 2Wild Karting

We just switched to an OTK kart for next season and the brakes are very different feeling compared to the Merlin system I was on before.
The Merlin brakes were pretty sensitive and didn't take much pedal to lock up. The OTK brakes are firmer and harder to lock up but allow better modulation of the pedal in trailbraking instances. Might end up being a driver preference thing, but just something to get used to. _________________ T.J. Koyen

| I dont like the OTK brakes on the hole they come with on the top of the pedal, but move them to the bottom hole the mechanical advantage makes the brakes MUCH more user friendly. Other than that, the glazed pads things is a very big as well. Make sure your heal stop is adjusted so you only hit the brakes when you want to hit the brakes. With the merlin brakes springs and such, you can keep your foot some on the pedal with out the pads getting close, cant do that with the OTK brakes. |

update: wanted to change pads and found that one side was jammed, which resulted in a brake rebuild. fitted some new OTK gold, hard/sintered pads, lowered the pedal braked connection. the result was much improved. using harder pads (harder than the black ferredo) and all the changes worked out real well.

Has anyone compared the different Tony brake rotor sizes 180mm and 206mm. How do they compare? _________________ Jean Michel Crettaz

| I bought all the 206 mm brake parts & the big difference I noticed was with resistance to fade. It was a pricey upgrade but in the long run I think it was worth it. |

Im told 206mm good for hot climate. Europe prefer 180mm as its warmup better in cooler places.
For 206mm better use the brake disk protector. |

So did moving the brakes down to the bottom hole improve brake feel? I've noticed I couldn't really tell anything from my pedal, just chalked it up to inexperience. Is there any sort of modification necessary when moving it down to the bottom? I have a race next weekend and would be interested in trying it out to see the difference.
Matt
EDIT: Also, what does moving the position up/down ultimately mean? (Just for my personal knowledge) |

Just switch to the crg vin05 ceramic bracke system and you'll never have another complaint. |

Matt,
Moving the position up shortens the pedal travel and vice versa. _________________ Ken Schilling
