What do you think about the Hoosier tires being picked as the spec. tire for the races next season?

I have mixed feelings. Ultimately, I think they chose that tire for a couple of reasons. 1) it's inexpensive relative to Bridgestone's and MG's (less than $200 for a new set...and if it's a larger profit margin for them, why not?). 2) I've heard (and can agree with) that they have similar grip and response to MG Yellows; however, they have a little more longevity.

Having said all that, it's inconvenient because no one else runs them...

What Hoosier compound did they select?

Jim - for the "Open Shifters" (and most all classes except Jr's and KT100) it's the A compound.

There's two A compounds though (maybe more, but two for sure). R50A and R60A. R60 being a little harder.

All,

Jet info and images....

Weather Conditions:
Temp:17 C
Atmospheric Pressure: 772.2
Humidity: 57%

Jetting:
172 Main
78 Pilot
1396 Needle (strange? Apparently this is what they ran back in '95)
2nd from top clip position

I took it apart...and it stuck pretty good I'd say. The guys at KartSport North America seemed to think that the cylinder will be OK after they take a hone to it. See photos (sorry for being sideways...):

So, I'm going to rebuild it next week (assuming the cylinder is OK). What jets would you guys recommend for break-in if the temperature is around 12-15 degrees C? Pretty low humidity too...

Ugh not sure what to make of that only glanced at it but crown looks like it was rich enough. Incorrect skirt clearance? Might need a replate to be honest. At least that way you can be sure its all square.
Not sure if a hone will do you. You could try melting the aluminum off the nikasil with muratic acid and see what the damage is. Be careful with the stuff, and avoid getting it in the ports/transfer ducts as it will mess them up.

I believe that's the plan, Jim. After removing the aluminum, they're going to use a diamond hone and see what we get in the end.

Jetting might be a little lean. We run a 172 main with a 55 pilot and the clip in the middle position. We're at 1200 feet here. With the clip in the second groove you have leaned it some. I'd go with at least a 175 and maybe more - spark plugs are cheaper than pistons and easier to change. Some of the pump-around guys run jets in the mid 180s.

Did you "burp" the radiator before you started it up? A lot of air can be trapped in the system and it's hard to cool the engine when the water isn't going through the radiator. Tip the kart way up (45 degrees or more) on it's left side. You'll here a lot of gurgling. Keep filling it until it won't take anymore.

Benn - thanks for jetting info. We're at about 800 ft. And yes, I did tilt the kart on its side to remove air bubbles from the hosing and motor.

That 1396 needle is something I would check on. If that is a Keihin, it should be 3 letters like DJG.

1396 sounds like an OEM Honda number, should also have a couple of letters following it.

BTW Looking at your stick, that exhaust bridge looks very suspect. I would be willing to bet that was replate cylinder and the exhaust bridge wasn't relieved.....
