I'm not sure exactly the helmet rules for a Jr.

We are running a Micromax engine the next couple of years. The previous years in Kid Kart all that was required was a DOT helmet, but I'm confused on the rules for Jr. Helmets. I see some out there for $300.00 that say they are approved with an SFI rating, but here's what the rotax rules say - (Junior Helmets - Under 15 yrs of age, CIK CHM 2007 or any approved WKA or IKF helmets). I was hoping to find an economical solution for a helmet, but it looks hard to find something under $200.00

The other rating is SFI 24.1 with a year code of when it was made such as 2005 or 2010. Junior helmets don't get a Snell rating.

We had a Bell Star junior when my son started it was a very small shell and was about 2 pounds. cute little thing. Now he is in an XXS which is tons of pad in a small shell. much heavier and he does not like it as much.

We put a lot of time in the helmet and it needs to last so paying 400 bucks for one is not out of the question.

how's it goin Joe...we've had good success with the Impact Junior helmet for my son....not sure what model, I think they just have one youth model..it fits him well and has interchangable liners in SM, MD, LG and XL...might want to look into it...check Summit Racing and Speedway Racing, they usually have helmets on sale that are rated for what we need or better. Take care of things on the bayou for me. Very Happy

Hey Andy,

When we bought the XXS helmet we looked at the Impact and Pyrotect. both are nice mid price items so it came down to which paint job he liked better. Decided on the Pyrotect pro air flow tribal. http://www.pyrotect.com/product.php?productid=47&cat=14&page=1
one thing we run into is glasses clearance around the cheek pad. but that has been an issue with most all helmets we tried.

As far as I can tell CHM 2007 and CMR 2007 are the same thing. I would advise sending an email to gorotax.com just to be sure.

Though I can relate to wanting to save as much as you can, don't scrape too much to the bottom of the barrel when it comes to a helmet. Granted, the most expensive helmets are that way mostly because they're the newest or the lightest. The least expensive helmets sometimes (I'm not saying always, so let's not have anybody getting upset at me) are cheaper because of a lower quality assembly and materials which, though they can get through the standards test, don't last too long.

I was able to swap cheek pads in the Pyrotect for thicker ones with just an email to the sales rep. No cost to me, so that was nice.

The Snell CMS/CMR 2007 rating is their "Helmet Standard for use in Children's Motorsports". More information can be found at http://www.smf.org/stds.

The currently published rules for the USRMC (http://gorotax.com/images/downloads/2012-United-States-RMC-Regulations.pdf) specify that the CIK CHM 2007 is allowable for juniors (under 15). I can't find any information for the CIK CHM 2007 specification. I think this may be a typo, when the Snell CMR 2007 specification should have been written.

The Vega helmet is Snell CMR 2007 certified. I bought one of these for my son. It is very light - lighter than the HJC CS-Y helmet he started with. The shell is one size - for kids - and the sizing is done by removable pads, so you can adjust as the head grows. The viewport is very good. I've seen these helmets in the $100 to $170 price range depending on vendor and whether it is on sale or not.

The most important factors for a helmet are that it fits and that it will protect the head and brain in a crash. The price has no correlation to either of these. Do a search for Dr. Harry Hurt's research, and you'll stay away from Snell rated helmets from the 2005 date or earlier. The karting organizations should allow DOT helmets - this specification mirrors the SFI 24.1 rating save for one factor. The Snell 2010 specification matches Dr. Hurt's recommendations following his research, so any helmet with this rating is as good as you can get now as well. The CMR2007 and Snell 2010 ratings are the same for children's helmets.

That makes sense. It seems they made the same mistake two years in a row. The 2011 rules say the same exact rating. They should get that fixed and eliminate confusion. Thanks for clearing this up.
