Just to add, we do start the first race of the season with Qualifying , this is to help everyone get back in the saddle and ending with qualifying .

I don't run your series, But I'll put my .02 cents in:

We used to run this format in club races when we started karting; they also occasionally do this in the regional series we race. I liked having an extra race for the day, but feel it only makes the faster get faster.

In that thought, it doesn't give those newer, slower drivers the chance to get Data after a session. The inexperienced drivers lap-times after a race are skewed because they're getting passed by drivers a second faster than them every lap; and the fastest drivers likely have yet to get to them by the end of the race. This makes it hard for the inexperienced to get up to speed throughout the day.

I think it can make better drivers too, but only at the cost of repairs. No argument there. A 30% rule fixes many of these problems, meaning the top 30% of the field from the final practice session get shuffled. Leave the people in the back to learn and race those at their level.

Just a constructive opinion.

Speaking of old school; I have to share this story. The first time I ever raced this kind of format was the first time I ever raced at a "National". It was the 1997 WKA National at Charlotte in Yamaha Light. I started racing karts on dirt ovals and this was probably only about my 10th kart sprint race ever. And most of those sprint races were at Jacksonville and only had 3-5 entries. Oh....and I was 37 at the time! My drivers suit had "OVERDUE" on the shoulder instead of my name! Laughing But I digress.

WKA "pea-picked" for starting position, even Nationals, in those days. So of course at Charlotte there were 40 karts at the start......and of course I pea-picked the pole position! I'm pretty sure Sam Hornish Jr was off pole. Ryan Hunter-Reay was also racing. I got a great start and led for the first 5..............corners! I think I was 12th when we got back to the start line on the first lap! Laughing

Here's a picture of that start from the June/July 1997 issue of Kart Racer magazine. I'm the #44 and we had just gone green.

In my opinion, we are breeding more "drivers" in karting than we are "racers" these days.

The FWT attracts some of the most competitive fields in karting, and I think everyone will be talking about how great the event was when they have a chance to compete like this.

Can't wait to see the format in action.

See you there....

The response so far (Facebook, emails, here) is about 15 to 1 positive.

Remember, this is for the FWT Formula Kart Racing events, not the FWT Rotax Max Challenge. The Rotax format won't change.

I really appreciate the comments, but do me a favor folks and don't post any more "here's what we do" posts.

It's getting people confused about what I'm planning to do at the 2013 FWT Formula Kart Racing event weekends.

So, if you didn't see it in the first post you can read what I'm proposing HERE

THANKS! Very Happy

Wouldn't you want to 'sandbag' and qualify mid pack, to give yourself a better chance of two good finishes? Ive always thought knowing how many get inverted leads to people trying to manipulate it to their advantage.

we watched the online coverage of the CIKFIA U18 championship yesterday where they utilize this format, and were very impressed with how well that worked. We look forward to running it at FWT

WOW, I had no idea that was the format FIA are using for that CIK championship. Well, it is designed to teach racing, so it makes sense. Great minds think alike? LOL!!

If you want to see some really high quality video footage from that championship event go HERE. It was run at night. Looks awesome. And my good friend Mr. Ken Walker is the announcer!

I want to again emphasize that the format change discussed in this thread pertains exclusively to the 2013 FWT Formula Kart Racing events. It DOES NOT pertain to the 2013 FWT Rotax Max Challenge events.

Thank you to all who posted here, emailed me at info@formulakart.com and posted at the FWT Facebook page.

After reviewing all the comments (vast majority positive) and discussing the potential issues with the FWT race officials it has been determined that we will utilize the new format in all classes of the 2013 FWT Formula Kart Racing events, with the exception of the TaG Cadet category. TaG Cadet is still under review.

Options being considered for FWT TaG Cadet include the format as proposed, with the starting order inverted for the second heat race, or only inverting the top 50% of the field in the second heat race, or starting both heat races based on qualifying times.

I welcome your comments here, or at info@formulakart.com or at the FWT Facebook page.

Why don't you just go to a straight pea pick, that will give everyone a chance to learn to race

Because so many programs include qualifying. It's a discipline they need to learn.

Just a question or two: are you allowed only one set of tires per race? If so, would a person ( a really hot shoe) be allowed to skip the heats, start last in the final with new tires?

Yes, they could. Just like they could skip the pre final for the same reason in the "normal" format.

However.........because points championship points are awarded in the heat races it would only make sense for someone who is not racing for the championship.

Just like in the "normal" format. Smile

Good morning Bill.
We are not in favor of the change. We run this way in oval racing and it does create more accidents. In your case you are placing 10 of the fastest drivers to the back where they are not only fighting between themselves to get to the front, but also slower drivers. Learning to pass and drive can be left to the local and states races. By the time you race in the FWT you better know how to pass! It is bad enough that we are now racing on D1 tires, which have proven to be near a second slower then D2 tires. Please change it back if you receive overwelming responces in this opion. Thank you! And good luck!
