Serious question here people
I'm 280lbs, running a 4 stroke. Rear sprocket is a 62 tooth. Can anyone tell me what I should be running for a clutch (type/size) and how many teeth would be best on the crank sprocket?
Not sure how many teeth i have now, but the clutch is your basic princess auto/max torque deal.. and it overheats pretty quick to the point of smoking.
What clutch is best for the plus-size karter? |

Replace it with a new one and change your gearing. The Max Torque should be able to handle your weight (original one, not the Chinese knock off).
I'm 240lbs and run one without any problem, I'll bet yours is worn out but if you want to try something else Noram and Premiere make decent clutches that are a little stronger.

Locally at least the Premier Stinger clutch is the most popular. _________________ Greg Wright

Thanks John - any suggestions on gear ratio? What are you running for sprockets? |

Gear ratio will depend on what track you're running on but if you're burning up clutches go to a larger rear sprocket. Brand doesn't matter as much as getting them lined up properly and keeping them clean and lubricated.
You can go here
http://www.southwestkarters.com/?page_id=52
and download clutchgears.xls for a spreadsheet that will give you gear ratios but you will have to experiment on your track with your kart to get it right.
One more tip, make sure your sprockets and chain are in good condition. One part worn out can ruin the whole drivetrain pretty quick.

There are two kinds of maxOtorque clutches, one for yard karts and one for racing. I would try a 13/68 and see if your max rpm is about 5800. You've got to get the rpm up above the clutch slip(3k) and keep the kart rolling, if you don't the clutch will burn up quick.
