I am going to rebuild my Ven5 calipers. I have never done this before. Is it as straight forward as it seems? Any tricks or tips to make it easier?

Thanks in advance.

IMHO,

Give all of the pistons and seals a light coating of Permatex Brake Grease. Cuts down on corrosion and keeps grit from working its way in.

Clean everything spotlessly with hot water and 409/Simple Green mix.
Dry everything completely, using oven at ~150 F for ~ 1 hour on hoses.
Inspect closely for scratches in the bores and replace if leaking (MC's & Calipers).
Assemble with lube as noted above.
Refill with the same type of DOT brake fluid.

Matt, there is a spot on the caliper body where the brake pads are held against rotation by the aluminum casting. You should inspect that spot to see how bad it's worn.

If it's worn really bad the pads will stress and wear on the bolt that holds them in place. Mine is pretty well punched out so, I got a long 10-32 grade 8 bolt so the shank goes all the way through and I could drill it for a cotter pin as well as using a new nylock.

The pads shouldn't really hang on that bolt when you're braking but what can you do except replace the whole caliper, I consider it a design flaw and there needs to be a replaceable steel clip inside for the pads to bear on.

Your brakes will still work ok but it's something to consider if you want it in top condition.

The only other tip I have is don't forget the little O-ring that goes between the caliper halfs when you put it back together.

Gif Cool

Warm water and 409 lets you really clean all surfaces and take your time and leaves no residue.

I'm putting new seals/o-rings in my calipers and master cylinders. You say to lightly coat the pistons and seals with brake grease before assembly. I know not to get too sloppy with it, but my question is will it have any adverse effect on the brake fluid in instances where some residual grease mixes in with the fluid?

Hi,

It won't mix with the brake fluid. Not to worry. Just one of those products that actually works (few and far between).

I had some help doing it by a pro, we just lubed them up with some of the brake fluid. The big trick I learned was using compressed air to remove the pucks from the calipers. Wrap in a rag to prevent fluid from flying. It was a piece of cake.
