Guys,
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HPXYc_kA5qE
I took my kart out to Mooresville Motorplex this weekend. I ran for 2.5 sessions (about 25 minutes total) and then the engine died coming out of a turn. Got it back to the pits and towed it home. See the video above for the damage. I'm not sure where all that metal came from the piston is not missing any pieces, just beat up from the metal bouncing around in there I guess. I was running a 180 main jet at the time. This thing has not run right for a LONG time. It was running OK for the first 20 minutes but never felt very strong. I'm going to completely rebuild it. I assume the crank is not supposed to bind the way it is doing. The spare engine I have spins free and smooth. The one on the kart binds so I assume something has happened to the crank???? Any ideas on where all that metal came from????
On another note.....this was the first weekend Mooresville was open. What an awesome facility. Just like a miniature F1 track. Ultra smooth surface and 1st class supporting facilities. Not many karts there this weekend so it was an excellent opportunity to get some seat time (too bad my motor let me down). Check out MMXKARTING.com if you are not familiar with Mooresville. |

Used to live in Mooresville Todd. Talbert Woods if you know where that is.
It looks like the piston was really pitted and showing signs of detonation. I did the same thing to my first kart motor and it was due to the fact I was running way too lean.
It's possible that the tolerances in the motor were not built to spec or that the carb was run too lean. When you rebuild the engine if you have the know how be sure to check all the tolerances and make sure they are within manufacturers specs.
Get the baseline specifications for what your carb should be set to and work up from there. Also make sure you're fuel and oil were mixed in correct proportions.
As far as jetting goes I'm not in the know with these motors so ask around on the forums for that.
As far as the crank binding up it definitely should spin freely. When I was in school and got the opportunity to assemble a Nascar V8 we were told if you can't spin the crank / piston assembly by hand you've done something very wrong.
If you've ensured all the tolerances are set to spec and you're fuel is mixed correctly I would have to say it was an improperly adjusted carb unless someone on the board can educate me on something CR125 specific.
Good luck! |

Yep, bottom end bearing!! Not much question there.
Any idea how many hours are on it? They will only live so long.
Running a Stock Honda, road racing, we put a crank in it every two seasons and the old crank, big end, and main bearing are always fine. We change it for safety reasons.
You'll need a crank assy as a minimum.

Yep, bottom end bearing. Look at the bottom of the rod, there should be a slot in it to see the bearing through, or, what's left of the bearing....
Just be glad it's not an ICC |

Well....could have been done cheaper but I bought all new OEM components. New: cylinder, piston kit, crank kit, gasket kit, every oil seal, all new hardware, and every bearing in the engine. I should have a new engine with the exception of the transmission and the cases. About $1100 including shipping |

| Sorry that happened, tough break. If it makes you feel better, I stuck my first engine during my first race a few years back. It was a Rotax, and I later decided that I was running it a little too lean on a cold day. I remember your previous threads trying to get it to run correctly. What main jet did you have in it? |

Not sure where you got all your parts, but just letting you know, for future reference, that powersportsplus.com has really amazing prices and free shipping on any order over 250. All those parts could have been ordered for less than $800. |

Pretty major order. I'd be really careful about throwing all that stuff into old cases. At least I'd want to be absolutely sure that the new bearings fit the cases with the correct tolerances. I think the kit motor is available for around $1500. That might have been a better option. _________________ A lie gets halfway around the world before the truth has a chance to get its pants on. -- Winston Churchill. |

| Where can you get the kit motor for $1500????? I was quoted $2500 through HPD so I gave up on that option. I ordered all the parts through servicehonda.com . I'm going to guess that the prices are pretty close to the best you can get. I added a few things like all new bolts/studs, reed cage assembly, rubber carb boot thing, etc. Still....I'll check that site next time I need something to compare prices. |

| Just for everyone's reference......I checked the prices at the site quoted above (just a couple of parts, not all of the them) and found that servicehonda.com was cheaper in most cases than the site listed in the above post. About $5.00 or so on the cylinder....same price on the head....so....looks like the sites are pretty close to one another on the prices. Servicehonda has always sent my stuff quickly and the orders have always been right. I used to run Honda jetskis and ordered a LOT of parts over the years from them. |

Just for everyone's reference I checked all the prices for a full rebuild, including a new cylinder, and the total came to 604.82 at powersportsplus.com and you get free shipping. At servicehonda the total was 609.25 and the quoted shipping was $65 for a total of 674.25.
Powesportsplus has always sent my orders quickly and provided good service.
So in closing, powersportsplus.com is cheaper.
Thank you. |
