|
|
I have been hearing of proposed changes to the Junior can class , they are going to add a restrictor to slow them down, then add spec pipe to the Senior can class to speed them up and do away with the 4-hole can...
On the Senior Can class this is just going to additional cost and upkeep on the KT100,
why ? _________________ Ohio Valley Karting Association

Why?
Something I know I've said for a while, why move up if you're going to go slower.
Look at the Norway WKA Pole Qualifying Times
Yamaha Rookie 1 - 53.172
Yamaha Rookie 2 - 53.180
Yamaha Sportsman 1 - 52.214
Yamaha Sportsman 2 - 52.486
Yamaha Jr. Lite - 48.769
Yamaha Jr. Heavy - 48.903
Yamaha Sr. Lite - 49.373
Yamaha Sr. Heavy - 49.827
Of course this is just one race, but you have a huge increase in speed between Sportsman to Juniors. This weekend, Juniors were +3.5 faster.
Now you look at the jump from Juniors to Seniors. You slow down over half a second.
And in my opinion at the national level this is one reason you see so many Juniors going straight into TaG. And leaving the 100cc classes.

I see the point you are making, but I do not think it is going to have the effect they are looking for unless you put restrictions on when you can make the jump from Juniors to Tag.
Tag is where the action is, so naturally the young guns are going to go there...
Unless you put in 18 + restriction... _________________ Ohio Valley Karting Association

It might not be a short term fix, but I think in the long run it will help grow the 100cc classes.
I don't know what anyone says, running a 100cc (Yamaha or Komet) is cheaper than a TAG. _________________ Website Designs - http://www.godesigns.us |

Open post to WKA - Messing with Yamaha Can class is a MAJOR mistake. Don't do it! Numbers in Senior's continues to grow and Junior class is already big. The class isn't broke so please don't try to fix it.
KPV was adjusted so it would go faster and participation has steadily declined to the point where the class doesn't even get 10 entries each day.
Make the minimum age of TaG Senior 17 and you solve a lot of issues.

Mark has a good point. I think the Komet classes need to be looked at more so than the Yamaha. And I was under the impression that it was the Komet classes they were looking at changing some stuff around.

That's right, the cheapest class to race is Rotax. _________________ Website Designs - http://www.godesigns.us |

Rotax? Maybe. TaG in general? No way.
The reason Yamaha is coming back is because it's relatively inexpensive compared to TaG at large. A lot of people bolted to the new gee-whiz TaG class and figured out speed cost money and are coming back to Yamaha.

I agree with Mark the Yamaha is the best thing going. The junior classes in particular.
But I don't like the stupid can. Its noisy, makes a mess, and breaks often. I heard that the IKF changed to a KPV pipe and ended up with the same performance with less mess and better reliability. If anything is changed that is is my suggestion.
The speed is fine, cost is great, and lots of racers to race against. Don't screw it up. |

We are looking to make a long term commitment to the 100cc program here so I'll be very curious to see what is proposed. Our Senior program has been hurting with the lack of new blood the last few years. I think a simple adjustment of the pipe configuration similar to what was tried last year at Route 66 and a few other places could be a big help if there is support across the board for it.
I'm not convinced Yamaha Senior Can is broken but if there is a solution that makes the whole ladder better, we could get behind it.
I don't really buy that the PRD Pipe/angled header option would be a cost issue. Most of us replace a Can a year anyway and the Pipe/Header isn't much more than the Can and everything else including the clutch stays the same in terms of buying parts. I suppose you need a pipe mount too... |

| Well I am with Mark on this. We are getting ready for a serious commitment with the Man Cup and Divisional series. If they screw it all up and slow them down we will run Marks series. |

If they do what you say they are going to do it will drive many racers away from Yamaha.
It is not about the speed. It is the competition.
What about the motors? Now everyone will be looking for the special pipe cylinder. What about rebuilds? Getting 1.5 hrs between them now. What will be required with a pipe?
This sport is seriously messed up. There are not a lot of people in this sport so driving even a few away is a real mistake. That pipe class in route 66 did not last very long. Why? |
