I think I may have a bad crank seal on the balance shaft gear side. How hard is it to remove that seal? Are there any tricks? I don't want to muck up the bearing or seat. Please advise.

Richard,
why do you think you have a bad seal?
Is it sucking from the transmission side?
Are you losing fluid?

Mike

One race my rotax blew up like a nascar cup car, or so I thought from all the smoke. Turned out the balance shaft side crank seal popped out and it was sucking tranny oil into the motor. Pulled the cover and gear and pushed the seal back in place. Didnt hurt the motor

I had my first balance shaft gear (plastic set) failure 2 races ago with probably 40+ hours on them. Figured it was just their time but it seemed that there was no (or not much) oil when I opened the case. I replace them and then had another failure in the next race! Again no/little oil in the case, but otherwise no heavy smoke or bad engine performance.

The seal looks fine. Maybe I just did not get a proper oil fill the last time? I'm running tomorrow and decided not to replace the seal but will check the oil level after running to see if I'm really losing oil.
