clutch locking up?

I have a horstman that locked up today. I take it apart every week, spray it down with brake cleaner, and greas up the bearing, spacers, and washers inside. This is the first time it has happened all season. It bogged down my moter and stalled it a bunch of times. I let it cool down and tapped it with my hands a couple times to loosen up whatever it was. right when it was time to go out we started the kart and drove out just fine without any problems. anyone have any ideas what happened?

Thanks Bernie. I will look into those clutches. I don't have the time for problems at the track. I got two full time karts one mine and one my sons in the puple plate. Also have another kart that i let others use to see if they like karting. yesterday was a tough day. The motor would not run right after it heated up, and my clutch problems. Thanks for the info.

Has anyone tried the Tomar TD 43-2 or TD43-3 with the new patented design and friction coatings?

Tomar clutches are great in my experience. The 2 disk is all you'll need for stock Animal unless you're 350lbs.

Marvin Justus who designed them worked at Horstman before starting his company. Then he sold it to Quartermaster, they know a thing or two about clutches I think Wink

I've sold many of them and currently my open class driver uses a 3 disk on his 25hp Briggs 305.

They also take the Bully gears so if you already have some of those you're set.

I figured it out. As stupid as it sounds I forgot i changed the jet and it was to big. It caused the motor to rev up when not moving forcing the clutch to engage.
